The cable carries the red-green-blue signal to the monitor and if it is not seated properly you can miss out on one of the colors which can turn everything a strange color. Those cables can also go bad. If you have access to another display I would also try connecting your computer to that display and see if you still have the problem.

This was my first thought as well. Check the cable. If one of the pins is loose, you will get a weird color that comes and goes.
