This is for Sorors young and old, and sisterfriends alike. Let's hear your ideas for new programs/projects (that college chapters would do). I searched and I didn't see a thread like this, so if there is I apologize. Otherwise, let the brain wheels start turning..........

As my chapter (Iota Nu City-Wide) started to plan our Sororal Year, I came up with the idea to approach NPHC and NPC, and hold a Campus Wide Vigil on September 11, 2002 to mourn that tragic day with Unity.

What a wonderful idea! I applaud our sorors for spearheading this wonderful endeavor. You have to come back and tell us how it all went down. Make sure you pass this on to National Headquarters as well as have the media cover it.

Nu Epsilon has never done anything to go under our International Awareness & Involvement Thrust, so we decided to have a clothes drive for those in need in Monrovia, Liberia The program is called: Helping Your Neighbor: Monrovia, Liberia Clothes Drive

I loved the idea for September 11! Very innovative soror!

-Delta Delta had a City wide Teen Summit this year to discuss issues affecting teens. All of the local high schools were invited via radio and school announcements and we got a lot of restaurants and stores to donate prizes and food.

-We had an AIDS Awareness Week in which we had an AIDS Knowledge Bowl, Essay Contest, Seminar etc...

-International Day of Service- Silent Night Observance for all of those suffering with HIV/AIDS and who have died because of it

-hosted the First Annual Greek Unity Ball which was a huge success all of the greeks on campus participated and showed that we really can get along

-DIVA'S GROOVE- Poetry night with candles, jazz playing etc...where we collect money for the Red Cross and simultaneously have a canned food drive

these are some of many....come on everyone let's get involved

My chapter decided to add a couple of new things to our calender for the upcoming school year.

-Operation Backpack-this is where each member is going to buy a backpack and fill it with school supplies and give them to students at local elementary schools.

-Campus Hip Hop Aerobics sponsored by our local radio station.

-Poetry Night Once a month

-We also have the usual book club meetings, voters registration drive, 3rd Annual Back To School Cookout, Seminars, Can Food Drive, Delta Social, Delta Talent Search, Mr. Delta Pagent

, Fundraising activities (raffle, bake, and doughnut sales, parties), Adopt-A-Street Clean-up, Girl Scout (I love my babies), Bon Air Tutorial.

I think this is a great post. This will help us develope ideas for our Spring 2003 calender.

I know a lot of chapters have a "Delta Week". Could you please tell me some of the activities that you do during that week?

I am in the process now of contacting all of the organizations...

I would like to say....I am getting some really good ideas also from this.....We should to this more often....

I'm sure the students on your campus, really enjoy them!

I know more people have more programs and ideas!

But, I like, I like.

Delta Xi had a Black History Quiz Bowl. It was our first program in which we had a majority of me participate.

'Expressions'- this is our project. Thanks Yvey. We do it once a month. It began as a poetry night, but fellow students can perform anything the would like. This gives us our biggest turnout.

Think Tank - Thanks Ray (KAPsi)! This was hosted by all active organizations. Sort of a 'battle of the sexes." We talked about the 3 r's......religion, relationships, and reproduction (sex). LOL.

My chapter is having a Literary Cafe on May 10th. We're working on firming up a location. When I get that info, I'll update this post & of course make a post in Events.

This isn't the first time it's been done, but it's a signature event for the Arts & Letters Committee. This year's book is "It's the Little Things: Everyday Interactions that Annoy, Anger & Divide the Races" by Lena Williams. I've mentioned it in passing on Chit Chat, just to see what kind of response I'd get, but I'm making a formal announcement of the event here (gotta pub for the committee

).

In addition to the book discussion, there will be spoken word and art displays as well. The book is an interesting read and has opened my eyes to some things even though I'm only halfway through it.

Another project my chapter and 6 other chapters nation wide (one from each region) are working on is an Alzheimer's Initiative. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has partnered with the Alzheimer's Association for a three year pilot program to get the word out to Minority comminities, particularly African Americans, about Alzheimer's disease, a form of dimentia. Focus points include learning how to recognize if a loved one has Alzheimer's and the resources available for suffers and their families. I'm the Coordinator of the Initiative for my chapter and I must say it's been very educational and emotional experience for me. My maternal grandmother had Alzheimer's and we suspect my maternal grandfather was in the early stages before he passed.

I know statistics can be biased, but I find this one to be true based on my personal experiences. We had the Multicultural Outreach Coordinator come speak at our March meeting. When she asked who had a relative with Alzimer's or knew someone who had a relative with Alzheimer's, almost every had of the 200 Sorors present went up (highly unlikely we all had the same person in mind). The Alzheimer's Association reports that African Americans are anywhere from 14% to 100% more likely to get Alzheimer's disease than non-Hispanic whites. Also, Hispanics have two and a half times the risk of getting the disease as whites, according to a study conducted by Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. Although it's not known exactly why, the "generic" risk factors of diet & genetics have not been excluded.

What Atlanta Alumnae has on slate for this initiative is Memory Screening during our annual health fair on April 26th @ Greenbrial Mall. We will be participating in the Alzimer's Association's Memory Walk on October 11th and are encouraging others to do the same.

Consider this a personal invitation from me to any GCer in ATL or the surrounding areas to attend these events.

Can Food Scavanger Hunt: We divided our city into several sections and gave a section to each participating organization and each organization would go house to house and collect can foods for the area homeless shelters. The homeless shelter came out and counted the cans and what not, to pick the winner.
We had movie passes and free pizza to the winning organization

This is good to do during the holidays, because the shelters always need to donations. You can also mix it with can foods, toys-for-tot and clothing drive.
