The "XYZ has their bid list selected prior to recruitment starting" rumor here is about one or two chapters that seemingly have all legacy pledge classes every year. They have a ton of legacies going through though so even they have to be thinking about which ones they want or if its worth it to drop a few to get a few Miss Perfect Pledges.
Heard the one about don't eat the food or you'll get cut. There is a similar one about don't step on the letters or the crest on the floor or you'll get cut.
One that used to play in my school (20 years ago) is if you want a bid here at XYZ don't talk at all when you go into the next house, so that when they came to our house the PNM wouldn't say anything at all no matter what. That was just mean. At that point, all you can do is pull over a sister that is a talker and have her tell her all about how wonderful being in a sorority is.

If your major is anything other than X, Y, or Z, you will never be an ABC.
At schools with deferred recruitment, if you were seen out at fraternities AAA, BBB, or CCC, you will be cut. Also, if you hooked up with a certain guy or guy in a certain fraternity, you will be cut.

One time when talking about majors and what not i told the PNM i was pre-law. She then said "oh, my father is a lawyer......wait omg was I not supposed to say that". Poor thing was so worried I'd take that as her trying to tell me she was affluent and not as her trying to share something in common with me (which i knew her intention was the latter and not the former.) You shouldn't talk about the three B's, but I knew that wasn't her intention

I mean, it's no secret to most PNMs that they are matched with actives who they will hopefully mesh with. Extending that a little further, if there is a PNM a sorority really wants, she may be assigned to one of the "best" rushers, and it just so happens that AwesomeRusher is assigned to the foyer...in rumor-land, it's not such a far leap to "if they put you in the foyer they really want you!!!!"
But disclaimer to PNMs reading this: where you are rushed probably means nothing, but even if it did mean something there's not a whole lot you could do about it.

There was one chapter on my campus who was known to ask about Dad's job. In my case I didn't really pay attention to it because I'm used to people asking about my Dad - he's a photographer and has photographed a pretty impressive list of celebs - but a pledge sister told me about her time there and was appalled. She told me she told them her Dad was dead. I think they also had a room you were put in as overflow if you weren't important enough. Or rumor had it anyway...

"Since there are so many girls going through recruitment this year, rush is super competitive and a lot of girls won't get bids."
The only schools this could be true at are the schools that have bed rush (and the only school I can think of that currently does this is IU).
Just because more girls are going through recruitment than previous years does not mean that more girls will end-up without bids. I seriously doubt the greek coordinator at Arkansas thought 101 would be an ideal new member class size-quota was that high because of the high interest. So just because there is a record number of girls going through recruitment at your school doesn't mean your chances at Greek life are any less than if less girls where going through.

This is my personal favorite urban legend.
It usually comes complete with some made up statistic like "omg recruitment was soooo tough this year. Like half the girls going through didn't get a bid."
False.
Even at the most competitive of the competitive schools, the placement rates are in the 90% range.

The ever popular "OMG 8000 girls started rush and only 500 got bids."
This is most likely because 1) girls were cut for not meeting the minimum GPA and 2) girls didn't keep open minds and dropped out of rush when they were cut by their "favorite."
It is NOT because 8000 girls went to pref parties and the sorority members tapped a keg afterwards and had a jolly old time cutting 7500 of them.
Any sorority member who repeats this myth is just trying to make herself and the Greek system look more "elite."

Yet if you substitute men for girls and fraternity for sorority...

Urban Legends I've heard at the 3 schools I've helped out here in California:
During house tours, if you're taken on a tour of the house in a group of 2-3 girls, it's b/c they like you and want to make it a personal experience & you're almost guaranteed a bid to that house. On the flip side, if you're having a house tour with more than 4 girls (which happens 90% of the time due to numbers), then don't bother returning b/c they're going to cut you.
Rho Chi Urban Legend heard here at UCR which had me laughing my butt off b/c it's the more ridiculous and stupid one I've ever heard in my life:
If your Rho Chi is blonde, she's definitely a member of XXX sorority. No questions about it!
If your Rho Chi is brunette, she's definitely a YYY sorority sister.

"If you carry a big bag, XYZ will cut you"
(Then post recruitment)
"The only reason I got cut from XYZ is because I carried a big bag"
Also - "I didn't get into my top houses so I am going to drop and just COB... no really, they all hold spots for COB girls"
- This one is kind of sad because some girls drop and the house they "know will COB" isn't... and they aren't in any chapter

When in undergrad, I heard a lot of:
"Well, I'm just going to drop out and wait for informal. I heard that informal is WAY easier than formal and like, everyone who comes gets a bid."
Like, they thought informal was like the activity fair where you walk up to a club's info table, sign up, and you're in.
Little do they know that many times, informal is equally competitive because a chapter has 20 women rushing and 3 open spots.
That, and sometimes certain groups don't EVEN HAVE informal.

Exactly. We never held an actual open informal.

My personal favorite (as told to me by a friend who's daughter didn't get the "right" house and dropped out of recruitment..three times) "If you join abc no boy will date you. IN FACT boys have been known to leave a table and abandon the date if they find out the girl is an abc."
The mother said this to me with a straight face.
