I drove 24 hours straight from Houston to Richmond, VA. I was absolutely loopy by the time I arrived, and he WASN'T ANSWERING HIS PHONE (this is pre-cell phones). I had no idea where the hotel at which I was to stay was, and basically stayed in my car crying until I finally got "a-hold" of him.

Reader, I married him.

In my senior year of high school, I took this Asian Studies class that met before school started. They were called "zero period" classes because they were the hour before regular, required school. So there was this guy in the class that I developed a crush on, and I noticed he was always there super early. I started going to this class that already met extra early even earlier just to sit there in the classroom hoping that, since we were the only two people in there that early, he would talk to me. Yeah, that whole semester, he never would talk to me and I was sad (er, in more ways than one)

But today, ten years later, he's my husband so I guess it paid off in the end ...

How about the craziest thing I was asked to do for love, but DIDN'T do?

Change religions.

My first serious boyfriend (let's call him "Asshat") was in his first year of grad school at my alma mater while I was a junior. Asshat knew one of my sorority sisters because they'd gone to high school together - and she set us up. At the time, Asshat was a Conservadox Jew, and I was a lapsed Catholic.

The relationship seemed promising for a few months. And THEN, I got the ultimatum. He told me: "You must convert to Judaism, or we are breaking up." I informed him: "I will choose my own religion for my own reasons, and will not be coerced by anyone else." That was the end of our relationship. (BTW this conversation took place over IM, as Asshat is ... well, an asshat.)

Two funny things here:

1. Asshat has had more than one girlfriend who was willing to convert for him. OMFG. What kind of woman has so little backbone that they will convert to a religion just because their boyfriend belongs to that religion???

2. I did later convert to Judaism, specifically Reform Judaism. Why? I fell in love with my now-husband. He told me up front, "I don't care what religion you are, I love you. I only want our children to be raised Jewish." So, knowing that my husband and potential future children would be Jewish, I undertook a formal study of Judaism, and ended up realizing I had a Jewish soul, so I converted.

Oh, and AFAIK, Asshat is still single. Perhaps because he is an asshat.
