SUNY transfer rush

Is anyone from SUNY schools?

Is sorority recruitment competitive in SUNY schools like Binghamton, Buffalo, or Stony Brook? I know these schools don't have that many chapters on campus and I was wondering if this means competitive/not competitive?

I'm a junior transfer student, btw. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Each is different but it is no where near as competitive as other types of schools. A transfer junior should have as good a chance as anyone else to receive a bid. Keep an open mind (locals, NPHCs and NPCs at those schools).

Just note: Just because there aren't a lot of chapters does not mean it's easy toget a bid.

But was Denise said, it isn't as competitive as other, larger Southern schools.

Thanks for the replies... I have rushed before at my old school and got bids from 2 great chapters but I ended up giving up the bids because my parents were strongly against greek system.

Now that I have convinced them enough about the benefits of being a sorority woman, I am actually excited about giving this another try in the spring.

Just be cautious with SUNYs... the SUNY system is notorious for operating in a less-than-sisterly way.

I can probably help you with your question. It depends on what kind of organization you're looking for (Social (NPC and others), Cultural (NPHC, NALFO, NMGC, and others), or Academic (groups centered around a specific field of study)). At SUNY Buffalo, Formal Rush for all NPC and Local Social sororities is held during the second week of classes in the Spring semester, since at our school, freshmen are not allowed to pledge any GLO until their second semester at UB. Informal Rush for Sororities (for transfer students and upperclassmen) is held in the Fall semester. Since I'm not a member of a Social Sorority I can't tell you much about either type of Rush, other than that from what I've seen it isn't very competitive. Most Socials have less than 20 pledges after Formal Rush.

As for Greek life here in general, this isn't a very "Greek" school compared to schools down South. Also, there are no Greek living facilities on campus; All Fraternities and Sororities that have houses, have them off campus in the neighborhood adjacent to our South Campus. However, there is a Greek Affairs office, there are events held throughout the school year, the largest of which is Greek Week.

Thanks for your responses~

What do you mean by less-than-sisterly way?

I'm still waiting for the admissions decision but more likely I'll end up at Buffalo or Binghamton. If these schools have defered recruitment and all the freshmen get to rush in the spring, wouldn't the chapters choose freshmen rushees over transfers?

That depends on which organization you rush. Some groups purposely look for freshmen, as they can serve the organization for a longer period of time than upperclassmen. But if the organization in particular sees that you are a strong enough candidate, then you'll more than likely get offered a bid. As a transfer student myself, I advise you make sure you pursue all of your options when looking for a GLO to rush. If an NPC isn't in your cards, try one of the Locals on campus, or even consider a Cultural or Academic organization to see if you'd might be interested in once you're at your new school. One thing you can do now, however, is visit the websites of the chapters on each campus you're applying to. See what fits you, your values, beliefs, and interests. That way, rushing will be a lot easier and less stressful when you go through the process, (or, if you go the informal route, you'll be more apt to make a decision on which organization's Rush to attend.

At schools where Greek Life isn't as strong or competitive, grade standing isn't a big deal. When I was a recruitment counselor, one of the girls in my group was a first semester senior and still got a bid.

I'm from a SUNY school and I think that all of the schools are very different in how prevalent Greek Life is and such...so it definitely depends which school you're at now. Where Greek life isn't so big, it's definitely not as competitive, and at my school, it's basically a given that if you rush, you'll get a bid somewhere as long as you pick up the cues from the different organizations as to which ones want you.
I feel like there are more locals in SUNY schools than elsewhere because of the ban on nationals something like 50 years ago (or maybe the ban wasn't statewide, but I thought it was), and at some schools national and local rush/recruitment are separate, and at others, they're together. Just a random piece of information.
Greek life is so different in NY than it is in the south, and from my experience, it's not that competitive but I don't know.

I know that you posted last semester, but I figured that you're probably going through spring rush (and potentially joining a sorority) now so I thought I'd post.

even though this is an old post, thought i would comment. i attend a suny school, delhi to be exact, and at our school, we are all united as one, and we are not competitive between one another with who we give our bids too, however, it is not necesarily easy to get a bid. most organizations have interviews and some have other processes to go through before getting a bid.

Very, very old thread, but I went to a SUNY, at least when I pledged Greek life wasn't competitive at all. My school didn't have Panell on campus until the year after I crossed over, but I only went to Rush for one sorority. After NPC came on campus, even with the 3 sororities, it was more or less a given that you were going to get into at least one of them.

We also had a buch of locals back then, but I think now there aren't really any left. At least based on what I saw on my school's website more recently.

I'm sure this has no relation to the comments on this thread since I was in school such a long time ago, but I have no idea as to what "not sisterly" means.
