glitzprincess08, I'm definitely in the same boat. Well, I also don't have time lately besides the whole money issue.
I have found that day trips really help if you have the itch to travel. Less expensive and you're just at the right level of exhausted by the end of the day. Granted, I am in LA so there is a fair share of places to explore, but try a theme day of going with a certain culture (Little Armenia, in my case), climate (try skiing and surfing in the same day---again, this is a very LA thing sorry), or just see how far you can drive and find a local town and their best kept secret diner. I've found countless adventures without a passport, but I agree that nothing can replace a trip to Europe. DTDAlum's advice is fantastic.
Random and of note: apparently Freemasons, if in an emergency, can stay at another Freemason's home, and they can be found in pretty much any city. It's a very, very interesting community.
