These types of threads are a combination of popularity contest mixed with cry baby antics. I came to GC as an alumnus. I think I was maybe 3 years out of college.

I view GC as just a message board with usernames who can be entertaining. Those who see it as some great connector or unifier will take it more seriously. However, the real connections are with people who don't need GC (facebook, etc.) to stay connected with you. It's great that some of us have formed bonds with the people behind the usernames. That's the only stuff that matters. The other message board antics are just laughter material. Zippitydooodahhhh.

Speaking of Holier than thou ... you seem to consider yourself qualified to pass judgment.

Actually, regarding my post, I don't recall proclaiming myself to be a "bigger, smarter, cooler, maturerer (is that really a word?) person. I was under the impression that I was simply stating my opinion and not handing down holy writ on tablets of stone.

I also came to GC as an alumnus after active service as an Army officer, an MA(Oxon), and a year and a half of Law School. Shortly after joining GC I was recalled to the Army for service in Iraq, commanded an Armored Cavalry Troop, and then returned to Law School, graduated, passed the bar, completed the BVC, was called to the English bar, etc. Whether or not this qualifies me as bigger, smarter, etc, whatever, is irrelevant to that which is offered as my opinion. To lapse into legal usage I would like to think my opinion could be viewed as persuasive but I certainly do not view it as binding.

I do believe that anyone who has been on GC for any amount of time has seen it change from friendly and welcoming to somewhat forbidding. It seems to me to be given to comments which might well be viewed as a form of hazing to a new member or even an established GCer who does not have the hide of a rhino.

Personal attacks and hurtful comments are, in my opinion, the domain of small minded nasty children and I stand by that opinion.

A few years ago MacAllan25 and I got into a dispute that led to a confrontation. We realized that the only way to settle the matter was to meet at dawn, pistols for two, coffee for one. Then we both had a stroke of enlightenment - instead of that solution we should meet for lunch and alternate buying each other rounds of single malt until we came to a mutually agreeable resolution. (Besides, dawn was far too early for either of us).
I suggest we apply the same strategy in this dispute.

Actually, it was an attempt to make a humorous comment.

I'm afraid the only thing sad about seeing Tom Earp banned was how he brought it on himself. People extended him understanding, patience and Greek courtesy for a long time, often in the later years without reciprocation. I don't think one can on one hand lament the loss of civility on GreekChat (a phenomenon I sometimes think is exaggerated to begin with -- not saying civility isn't sometimes missing here, but rather questioning whether it really has gotten worse) and on the other hand ignore Tom's lack of civility.

Damn, I think I really would like to have a single malt with you rather than drink that coffee for one, besides, dawn really is too early. We may not agree but at least the scotch would be good.

Uh, right. Doggone how I hate those commercials. But then again, I'm not a big fan of commercials in general.

Ha. And I hate malt yet malt isn't really your point and that commercial isn't really mine.

Since this thread became "one of those threads" pages ago:
What one person defines as "calling it like I see it/stating my opinion" is what someone else sees as "rude/uncalled for." You wanted to call those usernames (who shall not be named for whatever reasons) childish meanies and that's your business. Everyone voices opinions and makes judgments on GC. GCers needed to get over that circa 2001 and need to get over that now.

I have to agree that GC has changed over the years.

I don't remember 'back in the day' people being so high and mighty and nasty with some of their responses.....BUT.....I also don't remember people, mostly PNMs, demanding information about recruitment and heli-moms and dads. I think GC may have become "nastier" because people come on here DEMANDING answers to ALL of their questions and then get mad when we can't, or won't for privacy sake, answer them.

There are some old-timers that I do miss like OTW. I have to admit that I hated the way she said stuff 89.3427% of the time, but when you cut through her potty-mouth response she was dead on correct.

I also miss the activity in the D9 forums. The D9 forums were HOTwhen I first joined, then traffic slowed down to a trickle, and now on some forums all activity has seemed to stop. There are a lot of old skool D9 GC members I miss.

Oh, this makes sense. I also think that we get irritated with people asking things that have been answered a thousand times in the last decade. Like, in 2001, if someone asked if you need recs at UT, we'd be like "Yeah, you do", but then somewhere along the line we created a giant stickied thread that lists schools where you need recs, so now if someone comes on and asks that, it's like "SEARCH FUNCTION!!!"

This is a really great point. The internet used to be somewhere you went to chat and maybe get some information. Almost more of a journey or experience, as corny as that sounds. Now it's a place to getinformationrightthissecond and chat later. Goes along with the instant gratification we've grown accustomed to. I mean, do you remember call waiting? Or real tape player answering machines? Or real tape players, for that matter, that you had to turn over in the middle of a song and ff/rewind for several seconds before finding just the right place?

And I'm only in my late 20s... many of the 18 year olds now grew up with so much more that is "instant". And I'm sure those in their 30s, 40s, and beyond would say the same about my generation (it is really annoying sometimes to have pseudo ADD where I feel like I have to multi-task in order to accomplish something, yet I can't turn it off!).

But... I guess let's /tangent on that one Just a good point that user expecations for forums, social interaction (online and IRL), and access to information has changed drastically.

sigmadiva completely hit the nail on the head.

The fwap fwaps simply weren't around until maybe 3-4 years ago and PNMs pretty much all asked for help in a way that was very respectful. Nowadays, unfortunately, it's become more the exception than the norm. Don't get me started on "I read all those threads and didn't find what I wanted." Ummm no you didn't.
