it is very possible that each chapter was limited to "x" amount of sisters who could be present last night. With so many pnms there, i am sure that the sisters wanted to get to say hello to as many as they could, and at the same time did not want to detain any pnms too long so that the pnms could visit as many tables as they could. that could be why noone was engaging in in depth conversation.
look at tonight as a new beginning, go enjoy yourself and let us know how it goes. good luck!

Thanks guys! This made me feel a lot better!
So for those of you who were wondering... We have between 12 and 7 today to visit all 11 houses. We must visit EVERY house in order to receive a bid from any of them.
The 11 houses are: AXO, AOPi, ChiO, Tri Delta, DG, DZ, DPhiE, KD, Phi Mu, Pi Beta Phi, and SK

Is there any sort of structure to visiting 11 chapters in 7 hours, or is it up to the PNM to manage their time well enough to get to everyone? That sounds like a lot to ask of the PNMs if they're making their own schedule. I guess it would be good "real world" time management experience.
LOL I just had the thought that this reminded me of ANTM go-sees. Ha!

If you have to visit every one, it would seem you can spend 30 minutes at each. If they are not structured in how they are handling conversations, make sure you talk to 2 or 3 gals, but just a few minutes each is fine. DON'T get into a 20 minute chat about something with one gal. It won't help your odds and will throw you off schedule. And take a breather of a few minutes between each. Sit down, have a drink, take some notes, take a deep breathe!
Oh, little trick I learned from Disney. I'm not familiar with your school or the layout of the sororities, but most likely the girls will all head one direction first. Go the OPPOSITE direction and you will be in a smaller crowd. If the houses are all very close, look at the crowds and go elsewhere! But do keep notes so you don't accidentally miss one. (The Disney comment is because everyone at Epcot enters first thing in the morning and goes left. If you go right you won't stand in line. Seems crazy but I've tested it myself and I didn't stand in line for any rides that day!)
Best of luck to you. I'd love to read a recruitment story after the dust has settled.

^^^I do the same type thing at the NC Zoo. It's shaped like a V with an entrance at each end. We start at the point and work our way back to begin the day, then move to the other entrance and work back to the point after lunch. It's all about strategy.

In this kind of situation, is it possible for some PNMs to receive multiple bids? What happens to the bids they decline? Do they have a deadline to accept? Do the chapters get to give out another bid in its place? Are the bids all passed out at the same time or staggered over a time frame to accommodate something like that? I've never experienced informal done like this so I'm curious about how it works.

typically in an informal recruitment, sororities hand out the bids themselves, vs. the bids being distributed through panhellenic as in a typical formal recruitment situation, so a pnm participating in informal recruitment might be invited to join more than one sorority. she can only accept one bid, but she can take some time-is it 24 or 48 hours ladies?-to make her decision. it is sort of the way most ifc bids are distributed.
it would be very thoughtful of the pnm to let the sorority that she has chosen not to join know her decision(graciously), so that they could extend a bid to someone else.
maybe someone from UF will let us know how panhellenic is handling the bid distribution for this recruitment.

I have to ask -- are there 11 sororities below total, or are there groups that aren't giving out bids? This seems so strange to me, all around.
I'm guessing that many have only a few spots, due to mid-year graduation and such.

I believe someone said upthread that they've increased total so there are a lot rushing but most are probably only taking a couple. Just my guess.
I'm interested to hear with that many going through if Panhel is going to function as a clearing house for bids. It would seem crazy if a girl could potentially get 11 bids!

they increased total, and what with that and december graduations and what not, it opens up the opportunity for more sororities to participate in informal recruitment.
Not all of the sororities are participating.

Hey, I'll try to explain and answer some questions here! I just got home
So we visited all 11 chapters today. They are allowed to call us beginning at 7 PM tomorrow to extend bids. We have 48 hours to accept/decline a bid after it has been placed. They can extend bids for the next few weeks. Say if they have 10 spots available, extend 10 bids, 5 decline, they can extend 5 more.
They raised total by ~20 AFTER formal recruitment, so way more had to participate this year than usual. It was still a little frustrating though that (as always I'm assuming) some sororities are only extending bids to 3 or 4 girls, so you don't really have a chance from the start.
I can tell my mini recruitment story here! Is that allowed?

You can, but to be easily found in the future, you may want to start another thread.

Also, girls may receive more than one bid. There was no structure to the day, and I felt bad for the girls who started off late and didn't realize just how much time it could take.
The chapters not participating are not all above total, but their nationals or advisers may not say they have to participate. Its always like that at UF. So, its usually very random as to who ends up participating!
All in all it was a very good day, from what I could see!
