This kind of thing is more important in huge chapters (100+) where meeting the person you have something in common with can be a crapshoot.

Most of our chapters have 35-45 returning women every fall (IIRC total is 55) and my chapter does make an effort to match. As a PNM I remember at least two others did, too. I think it's a good idea because barring the PNMs who list an activity they don't actually participate in any longer, it increases the chances of having a good conversation. It was helpful to me as a PNM to be paired with actives that could talk about things I was interested in and understood because otherwise I was fairly quiet. There are usually 90-115 PNMs so most actives will have a conversation with every one at some point during the week, but still. And it was extremely helpful to me as an active, too.
It's also very easy in a chapter that size to think up 3 sisters with the same interest as the PNM on the spot since all of the actives know enough about each other to know who loves sports, who is an English major, etc. So there's always the chance to create a match during the party.
