AnchorAlumna - you are correct - you must be invited to the Houses & the Parties. When my daughter visited last year she stayed with girls she was friends with & had gone to HS with. Yes, I'm sure she prob did some things I wouldn't want to know about but I also had to trust that she would make the right decisions. I know for a fact that she was invited to several parties & teas in the Spring as a result of the girls she knew from HS or new girls she had met when she visited Bama. As for the House invites during Rush - I don't know for sure that her prior visits were why she was invited back but I have to think that played a part in it.

My daughter was from out of state and only invited to one spring event. The only reason she was invited was because she was a legacy (deceased grandmother) , and an alumna sent a legacy form in her behalf.
My D had a great, near perfect rush without knowing anyone. But she was very prepared with 2-3 recs per house, great grades, EC's and the ability to meet and greet. It can be done, but it takes A LOT of preparation. We started in early spring looking form alumns, as we are from a small town and do not have a local Panhellenic.
Good luck to next year's PNMs.

"Frankly, I wouldn't have let my daughter spend a weekend...a day, maybe, but no overnight visits."
Why no overnight? She's going to be there five months-ish from then anyway on her own.

Quick question for all UA people!!
-I will be transferring as a sophomore to UA next Fall (2011), CAN I LIVE ON CAMPUS? I saw something on UA's website that they "did not anticipate" housing for transfers because of the high demand for housing... so does UA just NOT let transfers live on-campus or will they let you if they have enough room?? I was really counting on living on-campus, because I wanted to rush and get the real campus/college experience! Please help!!

With all the incoming freshman as well as upperclassmen with housing scholarship UA did not have alot of extra beds this year. Early summer they opened up a formerly closed unit because they were so full.
You can put in your application but you may not have a response until summer. I would be proactive and do a bit of research as far as off campus apartments. If you can come to campus and look at some of your options I would do it.
UA has a wide range of off campus housing and some of it is very close to campus.
For general UA questions I would refer you to College Confidential / U of Alabama thread....those folks know everything!!

Y'all said you have to be invited to parties and such on Panhellenic Weekend, right? How does that work? I'm sure you have to register for that weekend. Would it be right to guess that you would need to know girls ahead of time to get an invite?

Not necessarily. I'm not sure how, but I know it is possible for the houses to find out about a girl without knowing her. Since we didn't have a weekend like that at UGA and I try not to bug my sister too much about "how they do things" at Bama I don't really know how they manage to find out about girls, though.

Yes, you register for the weekend and the official events.
But the parties and other stuff is word-of-mouth. Sometimes girls from the chapters write notes to PNMs and invite them. Usually it's the PNM knowing older girls from her high school.

Correction AnchorAlumna, the spring teas are not by "word of mouth", not even on Panhellenic weekend. A PNM needs an invitation. However it is pretty easy to get one.
1) Actives turn in lists of names of who they know to invite. These can be girls they know from HS or even "met" on FB or the like.
2) Alumnae provide names as well. Often girls they know they will be writing Recs for soon.
3) Panhellenic occasionally sends info our way about girls who have contacted them about Recruitment and Teas.

So it's no longer considered dirty rushing?
May as well make it all legal....everybody does it anyway!

I forgot to post my update ladies. My cousin's daughter pledged KD & LOVES her pledge class....most of her friends from high school are her pledge sisters so that's just the icing on the cake!
We were not sure where she may end up because she was a legacy in 2 different houses, including one where her mom & 4 aunts had been in previous years, plus she had 5 Chi-O cousins. She went to these 3 houses & I'm sure it was a difficult choice, but she went with her heart & we couldn't be more thrilled for her :-)
Congrats to all the new members & to the University on a huge, successful rush. The Crimson White ran a story where I believe Alabama's rush was the largest in the nation this year...that kind of blows my mind. We thought a quota of 74 the year after I pledged was giant!
