What? You think there isn't any authentic Mexican food outside of Texas? You'd be surprised. And yes, I know that Tex-Mex is not Mexican food.

Ummm...I never said that.

Arizona "Mexican" food and New Mexico "Mexican" food are very similar. And I don't like either.

Plus I hate the word "authentic" when used with Mexican food (and I've probably been guilty of using it). Mexican food varies too much to say what is 'authentic' or not. What we in the US know, is pretty much Northern Mexican food, very different than other parts of Mexico.

I don't call New Mexican Food Mexican...that stuff is terrible unless you really have a hankering for chiles. I've had it and it's a genre all it's own. I'm talking about Mexican food from Mexicans. I know exactly what you are talking about with the authentic, but when you are talking to people in the US about Mexican food, they automatically think fajitas, nachos and burritos. All Mexican food from any part of Mexico is authentic in my book and is so much more interesting that what I call Tex-Mex. I love going to Ranch Market in Phoenix which is the hispanic market. They have a great food counter where you can get everything (including organ meats.) The best foods come from little mom and pop shops, not the big restaurants.

I had to lol @ "the Mexican food from Mexicans." I had to read through your post to really understand what you meant. haha. Yeah, the little hole-in-the-wall, made by the old grandmas are the best. It's the same here, the more "big name" restaurants usually aren't that great.

Yeah all the Tex-Mex staples--chimichangas, fajitas, nachos, burritos, sopaipillas, etc--will always be super popular, I don't think there is anyway to get around that. And Mexican food in Texas isn't all that great a lot of the time either--you just have to turn on your TV and see the crap food they find in TX (ummm enchiladas w/ chili bean sauce....ewwww).

I HATE it when people say "well of course El Paso doesn't have Chipotle. People will realize REAL quick that it's not authentic Mexican food." Yeah well, neither is Taco Bell, but I don't see it going out of business.

ETA: your "mexican food made by Mexicans" made me realize how I loove Chinese food, except for the food made by my Chinese roommate and her friends. I didn't understand why, I would figure the "real" Chinese food would be better, until one day I went to the Chinese owned restaurant we have here (like owned and operated from people straight off the boat). When I walked past the kitchen I spied several Mexican cooks. From then on I kept saying that the good Chinese food was the one " made by real Mexicans" lol.

Do you know of any good chinese places in EP? I always end up in the shitty restaurants.

Same thing happened up here. I went to a restaurant that was advertised as a "authentic Korean" place. It was in Koreatown and everything (including the menu) was in Korean. While waiting, I looked in the kitchen and saw a line of Mexican cooks.

It was incredible, though lol

What restaurants are the ones you think are shitty?

I'm telling you, us Mexicans are so versatile. Chinese, Korean, Japanese, we are taking OVER Asian food! haha.

I don't remember the names but they all seem to end up being buffets. Uncle Bao's being one of them.

Just as there are lousy American-style cooks, there are lousy cooks in every ethnic group. "Authentic" doesn't equal great!

Hmmm....yeah I'm not a fan of Uncle Bao's at all, or Beijing Lily. I do like Grand China Buffet though (that is the one I mentioned in the last post).

Idk, if these are ones you consider shitty, but I like:
Peking Garden on Fort Blvd
China Star Bistro on Dyer (between Hondo Pass and Diana)

Although I'm not a huge fan, Sam's is pretty good too (it's by the EPHS area). It's a whooole lot better than places like Golden Buddha and other Westside places.

Sam's is actually the one place where I'll get Chinese food but it sucks because I moved to the eastside so it's really not worth going there anymore. I get carry-out 99.99% of the time so buffets are so pointless for me.

That's funny about Korean food cooked by Mexicans because in many places, all Asian food is made by Koreans, especially Sushi. Very rarely is a sushi restaurant owned by a Japanese owner. I love Asian food, BTW. I am a major Japanophile...not getting a lot of good Japanese food in old land locked AZ, though.

I tried a Cantina Taco last night...and I also saw the commercial for them. Funny thing how you find out about something and then see it everywhere. To me, it was kind of ņoņo (bland). My tortillas weren't soggy, but still a far cry from handmade. My husband liked it ok, but then again, he drenched it in so much habaņero sauce, I don't see how he tasted anything else.

BTW, Mexican cooks are the best.

Depends who lives in your area. Here it's Chinese people/restaurants serving "Japanese/Thai/Sushi/Buffet!"

After a long-awaited return, Chuck is coming back one last time to say goodbye. No, Chuck did not forget his password as some speculated. Chuck could invent an elaborate story about being speared by a trident as he was wrongfully excommunicated by DDD at convention... but the truth is any sequel to Chuck's recruitment would not live up to the hype and attention surrounding the original thread. And what would the poor DDD chapter look like after Chuck joined? It's not like Chuck was going to vote in meetings like the rest of you. Any continuation of Chuck would ultimately be a let-down. There are only so many ways Chuck can roundhouse kick his way into your hearts.

No, Chuck will not ever reveal his alter-ego's identity. Chuck will confirm what many have asked Chuck by PM and that is that his alter-ego is not DDD. For all you GC detectives who might be interested, Chuck's alter-ego's sorority (gender hint) is an NPC that was represented in Chuck's original round 1 of recruitment. Chuck Norris didn't repeat his selection because choosing the same sorority would have been an obvious attempt at self-promotion, and Chuck is way more panhellenic than that! another clue is that no one has ever even GUESSED who Chuck's alter-ego is because Chuck is no longer the regular poster he was several years ago... now he visits only from time to time but only under the alter-ego's name. One time Chuck messed up and posted a "Chuck" response under his alter-ego's name. Did anyone catch it before it was deleted? Final clue: alter-ego has fought online with AlphaFrog AND BlueA****.

(Thank you, by the way for all the interest in Chuck! Creating that thread remains one of Chuck's alter-ego's favorite GC memories. The thread was created for the sole purpose of distracting Chuck while Chuck was sick from work a few days and the thread just keeps on making Chuck smile every time Chuck sees someone give him a shout out).

I will end with a final Chuck Norris-ism: Look closely as Chuck Norris "walks" from GC because Chuck isn't really walking. Chuck frightened the hallowed GC ground beneath him so badly it is cowering away...

(See, Chuck's return was a bit of a let down, wasn't it? I guess EP was right!)
