I completely agree with BSCAXOalum. My daughter visited friends at Alabama in the fall & spring of her Senior year of high school. She was able to spend time with girls from several different sororities & just hang out with them (which is a lot less stressful than meeting them during recruitment). I think this helped as much in recruitment as the recs she got. She personally knew girls in several houses as a result of these visits, they recognized her & I believe that may have been the reason she got invites back to some of their houses. Just my opinion!

Does anyone remember where the thread is that explains the bid matching process? My
daughter had a fabulous rush at Alabama with a full schedule everyday, but was given a bid to her 2nd choice. I just wanted to share how the process works with her. I know I've seen it in a thread somewhere on GC. Thanks

Yep, it makes sense.

I guess I'll add my numbers thingie from the other thread as well:

If a chapter has say 150 girls in it, and each one of those girls has say 3 PNMs that they know personally (from home, HS, or wherever) that they're saying they "just HAVE to have"--- that makes for 450 PNMs who have "connections" in that chapter.

If every single one of those "connected" girls gets an invite, that leaves very few invites (depending on the RFM) for those PNMs whom the chapter maybe JUST met during first round and had no prior knowledge of.

In a nutshell, the computer first attempts to match the PNM to her FIRST choice.

If First choice reaches quota before the computer reaches her name on their bid list, she is NOT matched with them.

Ex: if quota is 50 and your kid is #71 on the list, (pending that the top girls on FIRST's list put them first and match with them) she is not going to match with them.

So, FIRST CHOICE is full and Daughter didn't match.

The computer NOW attempts a match with SECOND choice. Her name is reached on the list before SECOND reaches quota.

She gets a bid to Second.

Basically, you have to be high enough on a chapter's bid list to get a bid from them.

This is a VERY basic explanation so someone please correct me if I am incorrect about something!

The basics are .. a pnms bid choice is held and attempts are made to match it with her first choice until her first choice hits quota. At that point the matching process moves to her second choice and attempts a match. If the pnm is on the first bid list of her second choice then its a match, if not her card is held until they to hit quota, at which time the process is repeated for her third choice. If all three hit quota before a match is made, then (if and only if she has maximized her options) she is considered for quota addition, with again preference going to her preferences but consideration also give to size of the chapters and size of new member class.

That's the long winded way of saying, she was far enough down on her first choice's second bid list that they made quota before they got to her name and was far enough up on her second's bid list, either starting on the first bid list or moving there when others moved off, that she matched to her second choice.

Here is a Power Point from Kentucky's Greek Life website that can help explain bid matching.

You know, the system works pretty well - almost 1400 girls were placed in 15 sororities in less than a week. That's efficient!
