Candidate period.

What are some of the things you did/do in your candidate periods, to teach your candidates what the fraternity is about, to build bonds, etc.
We have a retreat, we try to visit at least one other Sigma Nu chapter to build bonds outside the chapter, we use LEAD, have building projects to help work on the house, movie nights, game nights, closed parties for house members and close friends only, brotherhood olympics, monthly BBQ's, amang a few other things I'm sure I'm missing...

What tend to be your favorite things or the things you wish you did more of or less of? I really like our monthly BBQ. a house of about 35-40, normally 30 can and do show up, and share steak, pork chops, ribs, corn on the cob, pop, occasionally hot dogs/burgers/brats, always vegie burgers for the herbeviors. We sit out back, cook, eat, and have a relaxing dinner around the Barbi.

Some of the most memorable times that my pledge class spent together were on the pledge sneak and on walk-outs. We had one huge sneak and were allowed to have 2 walk-outs during our pledging semester. The sneak was incredible! The entire pledge class planned a trip to Colorado to go skiing. Our pledge marshall new about it and we also took along 3 of the upperclassmen. The idea was to keep it a secret from the active chapter and dissapear without them knowing (usually taking something of importance to them with us [shower heads, telephone system, front door, turn off hot water, etc...]). We were too naive to realize that the active chapter was aware of the sneak...but it made the escape a lot more interesting with them all trying to stop us. The deal was, if anyone was caught, we would have to complete house cleaning before we left.

The walk-outs were kind of like mini sneaks. The pledge class would decide to attend something (all together) like a game or event or just go somewhere as a group and hang out. We wouldn't tell anyone about it except for the marshall. I think both times we did it we decided to take that evening's dinner. It was a blast!

Those types of things really help a pledge class bond and come together as one. Hope that helps.

Our walk outs are similar to your sneaks. The pledges take one active, and leave clues around campus with friends, girlfriends and the like. We go around, answer questions, and the actives(if you so desire) take part in certain activites. The activties are optional, but fun. Human pyramids. boxer runs, singing. After we get the last clue, we find out where the pledges went--which is to say, which other chapter of sigma nu they went to. The last few times, we havn't managed to get to another chapter because of timing, but this year we went up to chicago. Which was fun.

We don't have anything like a walk-out as you have them. its an interesting idea that we might try with next years class.
