Yes, they buy the houses ("improvements") back per the terms of the land lease. This is standard at universities where the houses are on university owned land. If they were on private land, then the house corporation would have to sell to some other independent buyer.

The university police moved some time ago. The 3 dorms will be torn down. I forget all 3 names but one was New Hall (though it was old when I was there in the 60's!). And they are not a block away. The land is adjacent to the KD and Alpha Gam houses in that cul de sac.

If you say so. Alpha Gam and KD are closer to the President's mansion than any other sorority house (being across the street from the Tridelt house), but there are/were buildings between them and it last time I looked ... or hiked through there. I don't know what's been torn down or what/who has moved. Give me a break. I'm a professor at Ole Miss, so I'm not intimately acquainted with the Alabama campus. I have one daughter at school there and know how to zero in on her.

Yes, they are closest to the President's mansion but Rose Admin and some of those dorms are in between. I did go to school there, lived in the sorority house and park near/walk through that area during football season....
The new lots will make that whole area sorority houses with nothing else facing that street - cul de sac between KD and Alpha Gam....

This is a section of the story about the new houses:

"Four new sorority houses are planned for construction beginning Fall 2011, according to McCreary. Sororities already on campus will have the first bids for the new houses, and new sororities wanting to be established on campus would then bid for the vacated houses.
The new houses will be built behind the President’s Mansion where Wilson, Byrd, Parker-Adams and New Hall are currently located. The demolition of those buildings was approved by the board of trustees in June.
“There are criteria for the new houses,” McCreary said. “Academic performance, demonstrated need and financial ability.”
Interested sororities will have the opportunity to apply for the new housing lots in October."

Hopefully this will help sororities who have out grown their houses and give an opportunity for others to colonize.

This may explain why Tridelt did not renovate their house as announced when my older daughter pledged back in 2006. Hmmm ...

Yes - here they go! My daughter is very excited to be on the other side of the door for the first time. I so emphatize with all you moms whose daughters begin rush at Bama today. Just saw the heat index will be 108 - 109. Hope they drink lots of water and have those hand held fans. It is so exciting, unlike any other experience in the world. Keep us posted how your girls are doing.

Man, I would be willing to pay A LOT of money to see my youngest daughter singing door songs today! Pricelessly incongruent for someone who once spent a week wearing dalmation pajamas and cowboy boots!

Are you going to a community college to save $ your freshman year or what?
Right now I'm at a small four-year university (it's a branch of the actual university). I wasn't sure what I wanted to major in so I never committed to a big university. However, I now know what major I'd like to pursue and that's why I am transferring to BAMA.

Also, there are many houses who don't let sophomores live there (or it's understood that all the spots are for seniors and exec members). The earliest you could possibly live in a sorority house would be the semester after you are initiated, since it's in the house's best interest to be at full living capacity at all times ($). If they have an open spot, they will be doing everything in their power to fill it before rush & the school year starts. [Sorry I know that wasn't worded the best, basically no you won't be able to live in a sorority house immediately.]
Okay, thank you! And I thought sororities did not do "initiation" anymore because it was "hazing"?

You've been watching too many movies and listening to the misinformed media.

Initiation is a beautiful ceremony in which new members learn all the secrets of the organization. It does not involve any hazing.

Initiation is a ritual or ceremony - a process that (often largely unchanged) has been done within each organization since their earliest days of existence. Initiation may include reciting creeds, wearing symbolic clothing, singing songs, and learning the sorority secrets and ideals. It's an incredibly moving experience, and nothing but positive.

In the 26 NPC sororities, there is no hazing during formal initiation rituals (ceremonies).

The media often use the words "initiation ritual" when they are actually referring to hazing activities that happen during the new member (pledge) period (hazing can happen outside of the new member period, but it's usually associated with "new members" of any type of group, from Greeks to sports to the military and even medical school). Hazing can take on different forms - mental, emotional, physical - and is not condoned by any NPC sorority.

Okay, and what are sorority "secrets"? Like what does it mean? Btw, thank you for helping me out because I'm fairly clueless.

Okay, and "Preference Day" you fill out a card with what sorority you'd like to be in... then you have "Bid Day" and you receive an invitation from the sorority that selected you... What if the sorority that sent you an invitation was not the sorority you selected on "Preference Day"? Or do I have it all wrong? I'm just a little confused about that. :P
