DZRose: I'm with you on this! Is it really something that boggles the minds of the public?

Everyone needs to cool it. Sigmaguy i think we all spend too much time on these boards and that includes u as well. Just let it drop. Greek nicknames are just another way to set back the greek system and we just dont really need them. Instead of focusing on the nicknames, maybe we should analyze ourselves and see if their is a reason people call our GLO this organization and see if we can do something to correct that on our campuses.

I agree that the names can be "just a name" and that they are usually all in fun. HOWEVER, sometimes the names do bother people who feel it is a negative display of their org. Sometimes, its not about the fun... but about taking OTHER people's feelings into consideration. Not everyone thinks the same.

I think the comments by UMgirl and UToledoFiji were right on the mark. Who on this board doesn't already know these nicknames? I have great sense of humor and I can find humor in almost anything. Some of the nicknames are funny but none of them are nice. And they aren't as funny after you have heard them for years. So how many times are we going to repost the same thread? I don't really care how you make fun of different GLO's on your campus, and if you have a dying need to tell me, think about why you need to? I would rather here about that great mixer you had or that very successful fundraiser.
That's my 2 cents.

Regardless of what the topic is...whether it's nicknames, what is a rec or favorite movie...this board has been there, done that, so please DO A SEARCH before you start a whole new thread. It makes us look like a bunch of idiots to have 10 different threads on the same topic.

WOW
WOW- I think this board is a WEE bit too serious for me. I can't believe how many people are all in a huff over a MESSAGE BOARD. I heard of this board and thought it would be a chill, laid-back place to talk about Greek topics and get ideas--- but what I actually see is about 20 particular people that have posted over 1000 messages and seem to get riled up over the littlest things. I sure hope you weren't so uptight during your college years-- how would you have had any fun??? If this was/is your attitude, I don't see how you are getting ANYTHING positive out of Greek life. It is all about give and take, being friends with people you may not have been otherwise, and learning about people's differences in ideas and opinions. I'm sure you don't shoot down a brother/sister during a meeting when they say something that you don't necesssarily agree with- I would hope that you would at least be polite if you chose to voice your opinions against theirs. In my opinion, this type of reaction to fellow Greeks is just as detrimental to the system as a few nicknames.

That's what people have done in response to your starting post - given you their difference in ideas and opinions. I don't think anyone has been impolite in telling you so. (unless, of course, you think I was calling you an idiot, which I was not) From what I see, you're the one who has gotten upset when people disliked the subject of the thread and and you're the one who has "shot down" the objections others might have.

Let me get this straight... Because some Greeks don't appreciate hearing their GLO's being associated with degrading terms, they are automatically classified as being "uptight"? I suppose if uptight = loyal to an organization and concerned about how it is portrayed in public then, yes, we're uptight... and damn proud of it! I'm beginning to think that Greek Life would be looked at more positively if we were all a little more "uptight".
And getting things POSITIVE out of Greek life... Please tell me one thing that's positive about sharing derogatory nicknames about other organizations over the Internet? I can think of a million positive things that have come out of me being Greek -- and learning some nasty nicknames about other sororities at my alma mater isn't one of them.
As for being polite -- People who state an opinion that disagrees with yours doesn't equate to them being rude. And I don't think anyone was shooting you down. If they were, then there would have been a request to close the thread. That's how you get shot down on GC. So please understand that there's a big difference between disagreeing with someone and shooting that person down.
Concerning the "20 particular people who have posted over 1000 messages" that you referred to... I've been a member of this board for over 2 years, and there are other GCers who have been around longer than that. So, yeah, the messages tend to add up after a while. It isn't like we sit in front of our computers 24/7/365 posting one message after another.
All this aside, the main point I'm trying to make in this thread is that being a Greek isn't about fun and games all the time. Sure, some of the nicknames are funny - the first 10 times you hear them, and as long as they're about any group other than your own. But, after a while, you have to sit back and think: "Is this really helping my organization to talk about negative nicknames? Isn't there some other, more worthy topic that I could be talking about instead?"
What it all boils down to is that I don't know a single Greek who can honestly say that they would miss hearing the nicknames if they fell off the face of the earth tomorrow. So, why not just stop mentioning them?

Well put DZrose. I can tell you for a fact that it does hurt organizations when these names are used. I went through rush as a junior and had heard all the names already but think goodness I had also gotten to know some of the sororities before I went through rush or I probably would have only wanted to pledge 1 or 2 of them. Now, think about freshmen who hear these nicknames and don't have time to get to know the chapter or people in the chapter. They may not want to join a very good chapter b/c of its nickname but little do they know that the chapter was not at all what their nickname protrayed them to be. This happens a great deal-at least at my school in the early 90's.
