I have been involved in several conversations recently (because of celebrities) about how such moments speak to the ways that violence towards women is still permissible, forgivable, and frequently not worthy of attention or comment, which is why it continues to be so pervasive.

I was really disappointed to hear Mickey Rourke's take on this whole thing, "screw the bitch."

Life isn't going so well for Mel. His agent Ed Limato died last week and the agency, WME dropped him. Too bad (not).

Sorry to hear of Limato's death. I love that William Morris dropped Mel though.

Years ago when Mel was married to the first wife I read an article (I have this weird memory for stuff so trust me on this) where he stated that he believed in corporal punishment for the kids...really believed because God told him to do it.

I remember feeling very uncomfortable. I am wondering when his kids (now older) will start writing books about their abusive father and their childhoods. And where was child protective services?

Are you saying that his version of corporal punishment may be abusive because he seems loony?

Or, are you saying that corporal punishment and abuse are synonymous?

Just seeking clarity.

He's incredibly conservative especially when it comes to religious things - something corporal punishment usually ends up tied to. But cp isn't inherently abusive.

Do I believe in corporal punishment? No. (I am the mother of 3 now grown to almost grown. And yes, there were times that I felt the murder would be justifiable homicide. jk) The way he phrased it (corporal punishment, for instance, it wasn't like, "yeah, they get out of line and I'll give them a quick smack"...and I can't quote exactly so I won't...it gave me the creeps.

Both. And the funny/weird/touch of irony is that living in Los Angeles (west LA/BH/BA especially) is an incredibly multi cultural place. It is a united nations in the best sense of the word. The business (show) is obviously very open to people of all backgrounds. So, all Mr. Gibson has to do is to complete the debacle that is his life and insult Arabs/Asians/the GLT/Persian communities and he is a dead man. (I didn't include mideasterners as a group because he already stated that he hates Jews.

Oh, a dead man means work and social...not literally.

"No, Ms. Sophia! No, Ms. Sophia...NOOOOOOO!!!"

http://wonderwall.msn.com/movies/new...tory?GT1=28135

"Oh, you're all angry now!" Gibson responds. "You know what, you ... (expletive deleted) deserved it!"
