Make millions by playing the game. Do what you want otherwise. It's a job. Artists aren't better than the rest of the population and aren't required to adhere to some mythical calling just because they're creative...or just simply good at playing an instrument.
That being said, Nickleback can suck it.

If you make millions by playing the game and putting on a persona that's not you, then do a 180 and try to do what really was in your heart, it's unlikely people will accept it. Either they'll think you're a pretentious idiot, or they'll be like "oh, they were so fakey at the beginning of their career - eff them." Christina Aguilera is a RARE exception, but that's because she can sing her ass off - I think she'll be around when she's 60 - and because she started out so young. Not to mention I think her family issues made her less likely to stand up to the record company and tell them to eff off when they were intent on making her BritBrit #2.
I just don't hear anything new or interesting coming out of Lady Gaga. She's got a good voice, but she obviously got signed in the wake of Norah Jones etc and then it became clear that field was saturated/over, so she went (or was encouraged to go) the freak route.
