Trying to make a difference
Hello
I currently attend the University of Md Eastern Shore as an upcoming senior in the Fall 2010 semester. First, i would like to apoligize if the thread i am posting have been posted or answered before but i am new to this site as of today so please bare with me. :-) I have been interested in pledging for Delta Sigma Theta sorority but since i have been attending UMES there has not been any sign of DST or any other sorority besides AKA.
Myself and a few other woman that are interested has received help from other GLO members to help us with going about getting the DST active at our campus. We have signed petitions as well as spoke with our student activity director and the president of the university and they did not have a problem with the idea, actually they were very encouraging as well. We then tried to talk to a member of DST in the area but they did not approve of the chapter being active at UMES, but they did not have a reason at all to give any of us.
We then tried to go to some of the different functions and everything at other schools but eventually everyone gave up on the idea. I havent given up, im still very much interested. So ive been doing more research and found out that that Nu Rho-DST was the chapter at UMES previously. I then contacted the Princess Anne alumnae from the DST website to give her an insight on the idea as well as request for more information or any suggestions she may have. Once she contacted me i must say i was very excited because she seemed very interested. Im taking it upon myself to also reach out for more opinions and suggestions so i joined greekchat.
This has become more that just being a part of a movement or organization to me. Because we at UMES are trying so hard for DST to become active, this has became more important to me and a priority to do all that i can to make this idea successful for myself as well as the current students there, the ones to come, and also the community that is affected by everything that we do on the campus. So any ideas, suggestions, or comments are very much needed and appreciated. Thank you in advance

So everyone gave up but you yet "WE at UMES" are working so hard?
You're not a member, so leave the decision making up to the members.

I know...but the font color tool won't allow me to change the color, and I can't point to varying problems within a sentence with just bold or italic. It's just a hot mess. I can't imagine a member of the SGA (see other post) writes this way.

Well regarding the original topic.....
The alumnae in your area stated they are not interested in supporting/helping you start a chapter at your school at this time. They are not required to, nor do they owe you an explanation as to why. It could very well be for reasons that only initiated members are privileged to know. It could even be for reasons handed down to the local alumnae from DST HQ. I'm afraid you may just never know.
I'm not a member of an NPHC organization, but I'll go out on a limb here and say continued pursuit of a DST chapter at your school, after being told no by initiated members may not be in your best interests. DST & NPHC members feel free to correct me if I am mistaken!
