Is it acceptable to have a recommendation letter provided by a family member (not immediate family: aunts, cousins, etc)?
I searched through rec letter threads and saw references to using family connections to obtain recs, but I could not find whether or not it was actually acceptable to have a family member recommend you.
Yes, but you should have a non-relative one also - a friend of one of those relatives would be fine. I'll tell you honestly - if you only have the one from the family member, it makes us wonder. And wondering is not good.
It is fine to use family members...in the scenario that Titchou mentions, I am only skeptical when the mom is the only one who wrote a rec. Often an aunt or a cousin or some other extended family seems less suspect. imo

True, aunts and cousins don't always think a kid is as perfect as mom may think. Just ask ree-xi!
Best bet, get an outsider to vouch. IMO, having a relative do it is like having a real good personal friend do it...both have personal connections and will write great letters...business, community and educational contacts that you have no real social ties to would be best....they know you in that type of setting and can give more insight.

if this is a recommendation used in NPC recruitment, then a rec. from someone you know(relative, family friend, neighbor, etc.) will be your best choice, but any rec. is better than none at all. maybe brwn skn 79's tips are for NPHC? her siggy reads zphib.
