Some general hair advice:
Do not wait until recruitment or right before recruitment to experiment. Example: Three days before recruitment is not the time to experiment with a new color/highlight/etc. that you've never had before. If your stylist makes a mistake or you just plain hate it, there may not be enough time to fix it. You'll be stuck trying to make an impression with hair you don't like, which is no fun.
Test drive your hairstyles in similar weather conditions. It sounds silly, but that style that holds up so well on a regular day may backfire on you and look CRAZY once it's hot and humid during August recruitment and you have frizz.
Along those lines, know your hair and how it behaves. A style that looks great on someone else may not do what you want it to do when you try it on YOUR hair. Example: You know your hair doesn't curl well. So don't get too ambitious and try some gorgeous looking curly style because your dorm-mate who is also rushing is doing a curly thing and you think it looks cute. Do what looks good on you.
