U of Memphis NPC Switching to "No Frills" Recruitment

How can they reduce cost anymore? Guys cost about $80 a semester and the girls around $300. I know schools where just for guys it is $5,000.

Hey atMo, why do you keep posting in the WOMEN'S recruitment threads?? How women run their rush seems to be of great concern to you. Funny, when most guys sign up for GC, they like to talk about FRATERNITY topics.

Gawd. Seriously, no frills is boring. Just like bastardizing the use of the word rush. Gag.

Give me skits, songs, flowers, peppy shit. Otherwise, why wouldn't I just want to go join a club on campus? At that point, you cut out a lot of what is fun about being in a sorority.

I know smaller schools and Northern school peeps are going to be all up in arms about these comments. But, seriously? Shall we discontinue formal pref night, too?

And, I know as a PNM, I would have been mortified if my first meeting with a group was all boring and all talking.

I think "no frills" is different everywhere. I think my school was pretty good at keeping some frill while taking out some other things. Ex: We don't do a skit night (Philanthropy night instead), but we still have fun-themed House Tours Night and Pref. We also still have coordinated outfits and such.

My only complaint was about Philanthropy night. I understand the importance of talking about our philanthropies, but I found the craft-making component to be really silly. It was particularly so if you were part of a sorority whose phil. doesn't really translate well to a craft.

I would MUCH rather have just done a nice presentation with video (for example) about RPM rather than a craft.

Oh no, we had skits and songs and decorations too. They just weren't quite as elaborate. But it's just like pledging - instead of cutting parts out or cutting down, they want to eliminate it entirely cause people are too friggin' lazy to monitor things.

I agree that the philanthropy crafts are the biggest waste ever and girls would learn a lot more about philanthropy (in its truest sense) by all getting together on bid day and working at a soup kitchen or for Habitat For Humanity or something.

I remember when I was graduating this was being discussed on my campus. I couldn't even fathom what you would do for this. I keep stressing to the group I advise to actually do something with the stuff they make during recruitment, otherwise this is just a worthless endeavor. I think they really need to overhaul that part of recruitment.

I guess I like the no frills recruitment because I found the whole skit thing irritating and over the top. Having college women dressed up in ridiculous costumes was rather embarrassing to me. I felt sorry for them. I liked the chanting, though. It reminds me of cheerleading.

We have been no frills for years at the campus I volunteer at. Here is my opinion about no frills recruitment. If you are recruiting in a Chapter House I think it is easy to do no frills. Most houses are so well done that they really don't need a bunch of decorations. It does get a little interesting if your having to recruit in a space like a ballroom or if not all Chapters have a house or they vary greatly in size and decorations. The no skits I LOVE. It is so much easier not to have to worry about that. The no songs or chants- I don't love. We have done them, then not done them now we are back to doing them. They are free and they are fun AND I personally think they show a softer side to sisterhood and hark back to days gone by. We have replaced our skit with a media presentation that includes history, dues, philanthropic, social events ect. It is a very good way to get information to PNM's using up to date methods. We also do no costuming. We have gone from every one in the Chapter wearing the same thing down to shoes and jewelry to just having them wear "white bottoms and a pink shirt" or a "yellow sun dress" it works out well, girls wear stuff they feel comfortable in and it actually is very effective in creating a mood. I have to be honest that I liked the look of the parties more when they had a theme, but now our theme is, well, AXO and it is cute and effective.

Reading above we do no philanthropic craft- I think that would be a nightmare and I have worked with Chapters who do it and it is a waste of time and money. Instead we do a video presentation from headquarters on our philanthropy. We have found this to be very effective for us.

My school had the same rule as Babypink's except we were allowed to have ONE bulk ordered/exact same item of our wardrobe (ex: you can all have identical XYZ flip flops for Philanthropy day). Believe me, they definitely checked if they were suspicious that you exceeded that.
