I gotta argee with blueyes ... I always offer to pay, at least my half. And if he lets me pay my half, fine, if not, fine too. But I only INSIST on it if I am trying to get rid of any vestiges of the notion that he might be getting closer to me!
The exception would be if I had asked him out on the date. I always thought that he/she who asked, paid, at least in the very beginning.
