Yeah. Well, our metropolitan areas (OKC and Tulsa) are pretty cosmopolitan, pretty accepting and there's actually a pretty good vibe if you know where to look. That said, our state legislature was set up so that it's controlled almost exclusively by rural interests.
Hell, our current governor (a Democrat) was only elected because someone put an anti-cockfighting measure on the ballot and the yellowdogs showed up in droves.
This year's gubenatorial election should be a hoot. The fella who proposed this particular bill is a state senator from Owasso, a suburb of Tulsa. His day job? Baptist preacher. He's as nutty as they come.
But this isn't even the craziest thing to make it out of committee this term. Not even close. My personal favorite was a bill that will ban human-animal hybrids.
