I doubt it's much of an option for someone who got laid off in his late 40s.

We all know, and have said, that some people may not be trying very hard. I think people ripped Kevin a new one because he basically said you wouldn't be unemployed unless you weren't trying hard, and went so far as to tell people here that
they weren't trying hard enough. It wasn't just his opinions that got people riled up, it was the "Let them eat cake" packaging those opinions were wrapped in.
