Some random musings:

Thought most of the girls really laid an egg last night. Nerves? Perhaps. However, there were so many really bad performances that I have no idea who will be sent home.

Those most likely to leave:
Paige Miles. Interesting, as Simon has mentioned several times that she is one of the best. She got barely 10 seconds of PR prior to last night, and with those wonky notes... wow, things don't look good for her. Kind of a shame if she really, really can sing. We may never get to know.

Ashley Rodriguez. Could have "the look" but she was just so plain and flat. Must find a personality soon or her days are limited.

Haeley Vaughn.
Haeley, oh Haeley. So adorable. So happy. So needed to wait 2-3 more years to enter this competition. Plus, the lisp bugs me.

Lacey- can't even remember her performance

I also found it interesting that the girls who actually did sing on key (Didi and Crystal Bowersox) reaped some of the harshest criticism from the judges, whereas those who couldn't hit a note for anything barely got a negative comment.

Katie- she is adorable and has a good voice, but anyone else feel like the judges are pushing her down our throats? Almost as if she has been deemed The Chosen One.

I loved Janell's Orlando audition, and hoping that she can continue to deliver that. We shall see.

Enjoying all the guitar (and harmonica!) playing this year.

Faves: Bowersox, Janell, Lily.

As for tonight:
Todrick is clearly taking a page from the Glambert/Constantine "undress us with their eyes" looks into the camera. Yick.

Aaron Kelly- darkhorse for this season? Kid's got chops.

Jermaine- did he hit any notes? Making me miss Jermaine Purifory.

Anyone else noticing how shiny, shiny, shiny the microphone is this year? Am I the only one distracted by that?

Judges:
Ellen isn't adding a blasted thing to the show this year, and I say that as someone who is a fan of hers. While loopy Paula didn't offer anything to the contestants, at least she gave us fodder! Ellen just seems to be repeating what everyone else is saying. She does have "stage presence" knowledge but doesn't seem to add anything on the musical front.

Finally, just learned that Alex Lambert goes to the high school that I graduated from.

YES! It's way too much.

I think Ellen has added some good criticisms. Half the time, she is the one to speak first, and I think she adds something to the show. It might not be much, but it's something.

At least she doesn't blow sunshine up everyone's a** like Paula did.

Now, keeping in mind that I just started watching the show this week with the top 24... these people suck! All I keep hearing is that this is the best top 24 ever. And I understand the first time on a big stage can be quite frightening, but come on. There wasn't one memorable performance. There were a few I "remember", but that was only because they have a distinctive look about them (girls: harmonica singing Alanis, short red hair; guys: blonde guitar, gokey kid, muscle man dad). Still, with most of the ones I mentioned, I can't even remember which songs they sang. Just whether or not they were ok or were downright awful.

They better start blowing me away, or I'm going to stop watching.

They always seem to be hardest on those with the most talent. At least Simon is. I'm really rooting for Crystal. I just hope she "got it" when Simon told her she needs to be original because for a minute there the comment seemed to go over her head.

I was really surprised by the results on Thursday. I can't believe the Joe Muñoz was kicked off when he was one of the few guys that sounded good on Wednesday. I know it's a popularity contest and not really a singing contest but it just annoys me.

I also really hate this format for the top 24...I'm already bored with this group and we haven't even gotten down to the top 12 yet.

I watched the guys’ performances again before I watched the results last night (love DVR!), and I have to say that America made the WRONG decision. Simon was right... the other kid that was up against Joe (who was brought back on the show after having been kicked off) got by on his looks and the fact that people felt bad for him after Simon’s comments. Even HE looked shocked when he realized he was staying.

And Mullet kid stayed?! He was probably the worst out of all of them! Ironically, 70s kid didn’t get by on his looks like the other guy did.

(Oh, and after listening to the guys again, I realized I somehow missed two performances! I LOVE Lee! His voice is great. And I agree with Randy that he should try singing a Kings of Leon song.)

Generally, what is the format for this level of the competition? Or do they change it every season?

This is the format they have used for the Top 24 for the last few seasons, but they used to have three groups of eight (male and female) perform and the top three vote getters from each group moved on to the Top 12. Then they would have a wild card round, and the judges each picked their favorite to round out the Top 12.
