Yes, you are too optimistic.
Moreover, "intelligent people" aren't the issue. Most Americans wouldn't be considered "intelligent" by some standards therefore most people who subscribe to political affiliations and ideologies aren't "intelligent." There are no education and aptitude prerequisites for claiming political and ideological affiliations.
Moreover too, most people don't research issues and believe whatever they see and are told someone of their affiliation should subscribe to. This means that they don't think about the shades of gray in ideology and will end up on the far ends of the political aisle (political aisles are dumb, anyway).
