Salaries are an important part of nonprofit work. You have to fairly (if not competitively) compensate those who are in the field. You get what you pay for -- good leadership nets good results.

I'm not saying that organizations who are specifically requesting Haitian relief should be giving their executives bonuses. When you run a campaign for a specific cause, that funding should go to that cause.

But general direct public appeals (annual fund, for example) can, should, and do go toward the organization in whatever way the organization sees fit, which usually is salary and operating costs, because the direct service components are often paid for by other grants and donations.

And to look at at another way, if my organization got a donation of ten million dollars RIGHT NOW that was earmarked specifically for surgeries for cleft palates, that would be money wasted ultimately, because it far outweighs the need. Realistically, two million of that could go toward cleft palates, and the rest could go toward purchasing a state-of-the-art facility and competitive salaries.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti (CNN) -- Ten Americans detained and accused of child trafficking in Haiti after they allegedly tried to bus 33 children into the Dominican Republic insist their effort was an attempt to get the children to a shelter.

But Haiti's prime minister said Sunday that the group was kidnapping the children.

Haiti is ripe for human trafficking violations so I don't blame them for being a little peeved that someone was trying to take these kids across the borders.

Right. I also feel like any aid or relief worker should know that you can't take a child to another country without the proper documents.

But, it doesn't even seem like they were relief workers with an organization. From what I've read, they were just church folks who came down to Haiti to get some kids. Some of the kids are saying that they aren't even orphans.

It's so, so creepy.

A Haitian police officer interviewed one girl (who was like 8 or so) and she told him that she was uneasy about going because she is not an orphan but her mom is missing. She also says she was going to "a new home with a swimming pool, a big new school, and a new life." So she went of course.

I'm leaning more toward the "good church folk just trying to get some kids" but I think they were a little overzealous and going about it in the wrong (and illegal) way.

I just feel like it smacks of the sense of entitlement some Americans have in foreign countries. Add the racial and religious component, and it makes me really really uneasy (not that I'm saying that their actions were deliberate based on race and religion, it just adds another level of squickiness to it).

Anyone with common sense knows that they can't just roll up to another country, no matter what condition the place is in, and take some kids. What made these people so special that the rules didn't apply to them?
