The other thing is, when you bring "sponsorship" into the picture, the sponsors are the ones who are then calling the shots, as they're the ones paying.

I experienced this when my company decided to have vendors "sponsor" part of our sales and educational conference. I would say that a lot of our trip was compromised, due to the sponsors asserting their own agendas and (to a large extent), we were powerless to say no, as they were the ones writing the cheque.
