Oddly, my husband was shocked when he looked at my shoulder and saw the first quote in the response I was typing. Once he recovered, he also mentioned how the first scenario applies to Muslim Arabics in European & Arabic countries because it would bring shame to the woman's family if she married and was proven to not be a virgin in the "traditional"(?) sense. His source are the Muslim Arabic boys he attended school with in France.
