Aww I know there are some weird Beta ** ones. Are we talking original founding dates?

Alpha Deuteron - Monmouth
Delta - Indiana
Theta - Missouri
Kappa - Hillsdale
Chi - Minnesota

Ha! I'm not gonna pretend to know where BZ, BD, BT, and GR go. Well Gamma Rho must be last. Allegheney? I can't spell that at all! Wahhh my bubble has been burst! Ok, I'm gonna go look now.

ETA: How the hell did I get Allegheny right? Wooo! Ok, I put it in the wrong place, but I'm stoked I got the right school!

It should go: Alpha Deuteron, Delta, Theta, Chi, Kappa, Beta Zeta, Beta Tau, Gamma Rho, Beta Delta. Hmmm weird!

It was a trick question (I know, so mean).

In order:
Alpha Deuteron - Monmouth - 1870
Delta - Indiana - 1872
Theta - Missouri - 1875
Chi - Minnesota - 1880
Kappa - Hillsdale - 1881
Beta Zeta - Iowa - 1882
Beta Tau - Syracuse - 1883
Sigma - Nebraska - 1884
Gamma Rho - Allegheny - 1888
Beta Delta - Michigan - 1890

Yes, so mean indeed. Do you know why they went out of order, by chance? The only thing I can think of would be that A colonized earlier than B but B chartered first?

Or maybe it was just for fun to confuse people? At Microsoft there's an inside joke that new employees are sent to building 7 to get their badges... Building 7 was never built, and badges were actually in bld 8. But people usually figured it out because 8 is right by where 7 theoretically would be. Although now it's not as fun because a new orientation building was constructed so badges are no longer at bld 8. But I'm sure people will find another way to bring up the illustrious bld 7.

I'm not really sure why some of the single letters are out of order. I do know that in the early years, they would "reuse" chapter designations of chapters that had already closed. But in the 1890 (I think) convention, they voted to add a Beta to those chapters to designate they were the second chapter with that designation (and Gamma if they were the third). That's why Beta Zeta and Beta Tau are Beta chapters even though they were established before some single letter chapters.

And thus concludes today's Kappa history lesson!

Oh how interesting! What a sneaky way to address it. I wonder if they made the change to preserve the history of the closed chapters, or with the foresight that they may someday be reopened? I would imagine they didn't think there'd to so many chapters in the future that we'd need so many double letter chapter names. There's so much in our history (and all GLOs really) that is interesting and just waiting to be discovered by the next generation! So much to learn...

Just contacted the Key Source. There is a 2009 ornament of the Stewart House (the 2010 one will be of HQ). I ordered mine, and it should be shipped on Dec. 7. YAY!

Thanks, again, for the idea! Bought the year my daughter was initiated and she loved it. Now I have at least one stocking stuffer idea for years to come!
