Carrie and Nightmare on Elm Street did it for me.
Was Tales from the Crypt a movie? I remember it being a TV show, and it scared the crap out of me. Then again, so did Unsolved Mysteries. Go figure.

Tales from the Crypt was a TV show, but Creepshow was a movie (and a graphic novel) from Stephen King. I always kind of think of them as being similar, as Creepshow was a series of short stories.

Tales From the Crypt was a originally a movie released in 1972 and was a precursor to the HBO series. Not as campy as Creepshow but it's still a good movie.

Does anyone remember The Changeling? Good classic horror film, no gore or nudity just good mystery.

How did I miss this thread the first go around?
I love many of the movies mentioned -- The Shining, Carrie, The Exorcist. Also loved the original TV version of Salem's Lot and especially the three Omen movies.
But only one movie has truly scared (or disturbed?) me to the core: Blue Velvet. I was away for work and watched it in the hotel room. Could not get to sleep for hours and hours afterward. A few days later I was back home and walking into Wal-Mart. As I walked in, the music system started playing Bobby Vinton's "Blue Velvet." I turned around and walked out.

For some reason, Blue Velvet just struck a very wierd nerve.
