Thumbs up Lookin' good!

Gamma Chi is really taking off! I do a lot of reading and not a lot of posting here at GreekChat, so I just wanted to say "hi" and give my "thumbs up" to everyone who is working so hard to make this work. I'm definitely interested in joining, but I'll patiently wait until you get your first group initiated. This thread is getting so long that I don't know how you have kept track of who is interested, who is on what committee, etc... Here is a BIG PAT ON THE BACK for Gamma Chi founders!!!

I've already e-mailed Maggie and Emily, so hopefully I'm on a list (somewhere) of wannabe's.

Greek Love to All

Erica

As usual Gam's (especially my Gamma family) kick a$$! .

*side note*

Ok, I didnt want to post this on until we put the applications up but, to answer Maggie's question...
One will be considered for GC membership if they have 50 post or have been on for 6 months or more. Reasoning behind this is :
1) You have a lot of people who post very frequently, but havent been on that long.
2) You have many people who have been on for a long time, but dont get to post that much.
3) Gives us a chance to see whether you're a serious poster or maybe another version of the V's.
That's why we were pushing for people to get on committees, so if they didnt have either of these being on a commitee if they really wanted in, would get them in the first time.
As said another thread will further explain as soon as I hear back.

Gamma Chi Philanthropy Committee Preliminary Report

Hi Everyone!

A few of us have been trying to sort out the approach on philanthropy. Here's what we have so far:

1) For the time being, there will be no official Gamma Chi philanthropy. The rationale is that it would be very difficult to find a cause that is not already championed by one group or another. Also, other difficulties are posed. For example, if we pick something like, Habitat for Humanity, some members may not be able to participate. A Habitat for Humanity office may not be located near their town, or the member may not be physically able to participate (injury or disability) since HfH typically requires helping to build a house. Something like this can be said for almost every charity. Also, we must take into consideration our members in Canada, England and elsewhere who may not have branches of a particular charity. With that, we are proposing that everyone simply volunteer for a cause that you feel comfortable with. The bottom line is, we simply want to help: help children, help the elderly, help animals, help the local parks...etc.

2) Gamma Chi will have a merit system by which members can receive Bronze/Silver/Gold Star awards for participation in philanthropy. We posted a survey on the greek life board and found that the average number of hours spent participating in philanthropy in a collegiate chapter is about 20.5 hours per semester. We felt that it isn't fair for GC members who are currently in a college GLO to be able to count the hours that they're already using towards their GLO for Gamma Chi as well. Then again, we didn't want people to have to do 5,000 hours of service. We also considered that some Gamma Chi members are alums, and some are non-greeks - they don't have the same built-in opportunities. So, we came up with something that we think is a good compromise.

Since 20.5 hrs/sem was the average, we thought we'd be nice and lower that to a conservative 15 hrs/sem. That is, we assume that people are already contributing 30 hours a year to community service (most likely through their GLO).

For Gamma Chi members who are *currently* in a collegiate chapter, the first 30 hours in the award scheme are "uncounted." Here's the breakdown:

- Bronze Star: 30 "uncounted hours" + 30 hours = 60 total

- Silver Star: 30 "uncounted hours" + 50 hours = 80 total

- Gold Star: 30 "uncounted hours" + 70 hours = 100 total

As mentioned previously, those who are alums or are not in a GLO are at a disadvantage. So, for these members, we have waived the first 30 requirement. Here's the breakdown for *alums and non-greek*:

- Bronze Star: "0" + 30 hours = 30 total

- Silver Star: "0" + 50 hours = 50 total

- Gold Star: "0" + 70 hours = 70 total

3) This award scheme runs on a ONE YEAR time frame from June 1 to May 31. That is, one has an entire year to achieve these hours. Now, I wasn't a math major, but I figure that, it would take 1.9 hours a week to reach the 100 hour mark. That's like two four-hour shifts at the local nursing home. This isn't that hard.

4) Gamma Chi members would collect documentation showing hours worked throughout the year. At the end of the year (May 31) GC members would submit the papers (by US post) to the Philanthropy Chair who would tally everything up on a spreadsheet (like Excel). Philanthropy Committee members have the final say to determine whether or not certain hours will be accepted in case of a questionable entry or a dispute. Our next task will be to draw up guidelines about what would be considered "philanthropy" (like, babysitting your niece is not philanthropy ).

5) Philanthropy Merit Award recipients would be announced by the end of June (hopefully!). Recipients would receive
a bronze, silver or gold star recognition pin and maybe a certificate. The pins are not precious metal. We're not sure how this would be paid for. We may just have to offer the pins as a side purchase (they're like $5). One committee member thought dangles would be cool. That's a great idea too and we're currently looking for appropriate items.

6) Finally, the names of the various Merit Award winners will be sent to their respective GLOs with a letter like, "The following members of Gamma Chi International Co-Ed Fraternity have been awarded with a Bronze/Silver/Gold Star Award for excellence in philanthropy. Since [Susie] and [Mary] are members of [XYZ] we thought you would like to join us in congratulating them on their achievement." You know, something like that. We thought this would magnify the achievement for our hardworking members, plus help get Gamma Chi's name out to other GLOs. Yes, Alumni names would be included. I'm not sure if we can do anything similar for the non-greeks. I don't even think we have many in Gamma Chi.

I know that this is a lot. The committee welcomes feedback from everyone on any of this. Okie dokie? Thanks!

Typing on behalf of the Philanthropy Committee,

......Kelly

Hey guys...this really isn't related to Gamma Chi, but I could use some help. I am subscribed to the Alpha Omicron Pi forum...I'm in AOII, makes sense! I was just wondering if someone can tell me how to subscribed to this thread so that I can get to the latest posts faster? Like, there is a section on my thing where it says "Subscribed Threads," but I can't add anything to that section.
Any information would be great! Thanks!

[b]Membership Committee Preliminary Report[b]

Request of Various Committees

Scholarship Committee
Scholarship wanted to know if we agreed that there should be a GPA requirement for Gamma Chi and if so, should Gamma chi wait until grades come in and for members who have graduated should they have to send in a transcript?
All though grades should be stressed and at some point, a GPA could be given for possible research and other things, the Membership committee didn’t feel that having a minimum GPA to become a member of Gamma Chi was necessary for the reasons that …
We are more of an interest group and not an actual national organization. Maybe further down the line, but not at this point.
There are many alumni who have been out of school for years and it would be hard from them to remember and too much of a hassle for transcripts.
**However, scholarship committee has the right to determine whether this merits any awards they want to give out and maybe further down the line whether grades mean probation in membership and/or cause for termination.

Membership Committee Developments

Membership Requirements
We require 6 months of GreekChat membership or at least 50 post. The committee figured that we have many posters who have been on for a long amount of time, but don’t get to post often and also many people who haven’t been on long, but post constantly. This was is fair to all. Obviously those who help on committees are "automatic" members, but still will have to fill out a membership application.

Application
My Lai (Hawaiiagd) is also being asked about how to code the membership application on the future Gamma Chi website, so that applications can just be submitted there.

Fraternity Education
Psychtau is currently coming up with a format to develop a fraternity education program. It is still in the works, but will include the following:
Founders, Creation of GreekChat and Gamma Chi, History of GLO’s (National, Local, Academic, etc.) How to use GreekChat, Internet Etiquette, Mental/Physical Health, Substance Abuse Awareness, Why We Have Philanthropies and more. Will update in next report.

Membership Suggestions
Committee Screennames for GreekChat postings. That way if the committee wants everyone to know something, they can just post it with the author being for example "Gamma Chi Officer Committee". Only members of the committee will have access to the password.

Membership Questions
What are the expectations of the Membership Committee? The committee would like to know what we should be doing as our job besides bring in new members and fraternity education. Is there anything specific?

damn, very nice! very well thought out, very organized and very intelligent!

Just a point I want to make. i think that in time maybe we could actually get a house or an office somewhere where a ton of people live (say a lot of the members of gamma Chi live in the same area like Nashville or Chicago or something) and make it a national headquarters like 10-5 years down the line.. If we could get this registered as a chartible organization people can make donatiosnw hich would then be used to buy the house or something. But I don;t mind it just being in cyberspce at the moment.

Ritual committee update

Here's a brief update... fellow ritual committee members, if I missed anything, just post it.

We have a draft for a new member ceremony, and we're currently trying to schedule something for next week. See the "Gamma Chi New Member Ceremony" thread for details. The NM ceremony next week will be only for Alpha class members - I gather membership is working on an application, so we may be doing a ceremony for a Beta class soon.

Optimist Prime is working on the initiation ceremony, Leslie Anne is working on the badge design, and Wendy (theta sig agd) is at work on a crest. Initiation will hopefully be some time over the summer... anyone without computer access over the summer will be initiated in the early fall.

I think I've covered everything, but I'm not 100% (getting sick ) so I've probably forgotten something...

Ok first for the scholarship committee. Idont think we need a min GPA. You can do very well in a GLO but not in school. The only reason I feel a min GPA or transcript is needed is if we have scholarships in the future where you need to qualify to recieve them. Another reason you could have min gpa's is if you have some kind of "GX scholars" list where you recognize people for there achievments, but I do NOT think we should have a min GPA just to join!!

Membership Questions- I expect the membership committee to keep all records updated to the best of there ability. Continue to come up with programs for our membership. I am sorry but this is as specific as I can be on this. Hope I have helped in some way!

And to the Iota family....lets talk and plan for our future family members!!!! PM me!!!
