If publishing the book and being on Oprah helps her in someway to release any demons, then I'm happy for her. However, that seems like a huge stretch, and I can't watch Oprah today. Her appearance on the show is just disturbing and seems to be a need for attention like DaemonSeid said. But if it helps one person out there, then...okay. I'm still so disturbed in my heart at the idea of years of consensual incest with her father.

She's written and talked about everything before but the incest. Her father's not around to confirm or deny. Makes me wonder if she's making up stuff to sell books? She can't be in very good financial shape. Sad, because she had a lot of talent.

I was about to edit my original post with that fact. If she'll publish a book about this subject, there's no telling how far she'll go to further her "career" or make some money.

I honestly don't see who in their right mind would want to read about this subject. Just reading how her father suggested moving overseas to continue the incest gave me a headache. Who wants to pay $25 or so for a hardback that they'll probably read only once? I'm having a hard time even listening to a favorite afternoon drive radio show talking about this matter.

I'll be watching Tyra instead about the first year of parenthood and what no one talks about.

LOL! Some of us haven't upgraded yet. It's actually $17.15 a hardback at Amazon, and Kindle version is $14.29. It's currently ranked 18th. I'm gonna pretend this whole matter doesn't exist. I'm getting nauseous. Have a good day, GC.

I'm sorry, the interview on Oprah was disgusting. I don't know if it's true. I don't want to know if it's true. However, I agree that she most likely needs the money since it's all going into her veins.

she probably wanted this long because (in part) because she thought no one would believe her....and since some people don't want to, they won't. (for example: posts doubting the timing/motivations/truth of her claims)

Good point...and speaking for myself, it's not that I don't believe it, it's how she is going about telling the business that makes hearing what happened all the more uncomfortable.

Ew. I know that everyone has a story and everyone deserves to be heard but I'm still grossed out.

So just because we find her story disgusting means that she shouldn't share it? This was rape, incest, sexual abuse, however you want to describe it, and that stuff is unfortunately far more common than people want to believe. That it morphed into a "consentual" relationship that lasted 10 years I'm willing to speculate was because of the position of authority her father was in. I mean, having your dad rape you - and I bet that encounter was not the first time her dad made advances toward her - must really mess with your mind. Add to that that she was so drugged up at that time in her life, and I guess it doesn't surprise me that her dad could manipulate her like that.

McKenzie Phillips' reputation and career was ruined by her drug habit. Maybe she blames her dad a little (or a lot) for that and she wants the world to know it. Seems to me that she (and other celebrities such as Oprah who disclose sexual abuse and other horrible things many years later), is looking for a little understanding or sympathy from people who have had none for her.

One Day at at Time was before my time, but I do love American Graffiti, and I'll always think of McKenzie in her role in that movie.

Is that what you gathered from our responses?

My problem with this whole thing is that she doesn't seem to be doing this to come out with it as a way to do anything else than to make some money off of her family's notorious dysfunction.

Why did she do this? It's not for punitive reasons--her father's been dead for nearly a decade and he can't only confirm or deny it, he can't be punished for it if it's even true. It doesn't seem to be in order to help people going through similar tragedies; if that was the case she would have worked with an organization like RAINN. She even could have used her appearance on Oprah on that angle--since Ms. Winfrey has been very open about her history of abuse. Why does her confession happen to center around her book's release?
