I hate Austin's tendency to have streets change names in the middle for no apparent reason.
I love Chuy's.
Guess it's a toss-up.

I'm going to a wedding next month that's at the Driskill--you guessed it, 6th Street. I can't freaking wait for the 6th Street bar crawl 2 nights before the wedding!
I love Austin. If/when I leave NYC, Austin is #3 on my list (after SF and Boston).

I've heard some good things about Austin. It seems like it'd be a fun place to work and live. I've never lived in the South (although I've visited a bunch of times), though, so I'm not sure how well I'd adjust after living my entire life in the Northeast.
Also your list looks a lot like my list; when I leave CT I'd either like to head back to Boston, or to DC or SF (in that order).

Oh - go hang out at one of the coolest stretches in the nation (and certainly the coolest in a "college town" atmosphere) and he'll get why Austin sucks? Are you kidding?

Austin's not as Southerny as some other places...with Dell and UT there, it's definitely more cosmopolitan than Texas cities of similar sizes. I grew up in the South, and have lived my entire adult life in the Northeast, and I liked it a lot. It's pretty liberal, though; a blue dot in a sea of red.

The Driskill Hotel is AWESOME - really incredible. www.driskillhotel.com
I'm still holding a grudge, though, for the totally bogus ticket I got last fall in Austin.

I'll figure out what?.......6th street is a legendary strip of bars and restaurants frequented by all walks of life that help give Austin the character that people love. If 6th isn't for you......then go somewhere else in Austin. There's plenty of places to go for bars and great food that aren't on 6th.
You are fighting an uphill battle, Sport.
People that hate Texas.......love Austin.
Live music capital of the world
Beautiful women

one of the top bar/party scenes you'll find.

We used to have people come into my former place of employment (a family medical practice that was approx. 97% or more medicaid patients) who couldnt pay a $2 co-pay yet could produce enough money to buy a pack of cigarettes.

You'd be suprised. Many, many are on drugs, but certainly not all. We had a few patients that wouldnt suprise me in the least to sell their children to perverts to get their next narcotic/meth fix or even something as small as a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of liquor to support their habits.
I am quite sure we also had a few who would litterally sell their children in an effort to get rich quick or to simply get rid of them.
There are some good people that are on welfare/government assistance that are legitimately on it and trying to better themselves to get off it. However, with my personal experience working with this population, most of what I saw was sheer laziness, stupidity, no ambition to do/get better, "the world owes me something" attitude, and in a few cases fraud. My former co-workers and I often commented to each other as to where these people got their logic from.

Yep.
I used to work in a county hospital. We had the same $2 co-pay for the therapy department; for $5 you could get all your prescriptions.
Same thing. While they couldn't muster up $5 for a sack full of medicine, there was somehow enough money for every single person in the family to have a cell phone. Go figure.

I'm not sure where you are in KY, but my personal experience with the eastern part of the state (generalizing here - this definitely isn't the case with ALL eastern Kentuckians) suggests that another reason is an unwillingness to leave their hometown. It's difficult to find employment when the only employers in the county are a Frosty Freeze and the county school system. But it's funny - I once asked a EKY high school senior what he wanted to be "when he grew up" and he said, "A marine biologist." That's cool; where do you want to live - the east coast? west coast? His answer, "Well, I want to live here." Interesting. Just what kind of marine life can you study in a landlocked state? I've never seen such a reluctance to venture past the back yard as I did in eastern KY.

I live in Central KY now. I was raised in Eastern KY. I must agree with the hometown thing. Southcentral Kentucky is like that too. They will come to college, get a nice degree, then go home to podunk and wonder why they cant find a job---perhaps because the job you seek isnt there and would require you to go elsewhere in KY or outside the state?
The state and local governments also do a crappy job with trying to get industries/companies to come to these areas to help provide jobs for people and improve the standard of living. The I-75 interstate section that runs through this part of Kentucky is a major thoroughfare for drugs (mainly pot & meth) and human traffiking (hispanics). Meth. & narcotics are the major drug problems we have in Eastern & Southcentral KY.
