I know that costs vary, but as a generality, a sorority house usually costs just under the price of dorms, right? That's what I seemed to have picked up on at least.

It depends on your school. Where you go to school, living in a sorority may be less expensive than the dorms. Here, I think it depends on the dorm. Example: Sorority living is cheaper than the more expensive dorms here, but it's pretty equal to some of the cheaper dorms (and sometimes costs more).

exactly, and you also have to consider other things when looking at cost- such as food. The sorority house you may be 21 meals of good food a week, versus only paying for 10 in a dining hall. My house also had parlor fees for the women who didn't live in the house- but it was waived for those who lived in.
So living in a dorm + parlor fees + food costs was more expensive than living in the house, even though it didn't look like it at first glance.

I'm not a student at Wayne State but I've worked with our sorority chapter there for over 15 years and I can see Wayne State from my office. There are NO sorority houses at Wayne State. It's an urban, commuter campus and there are no sorority houses. It's a really unique situation because sisters can live 50-60 miles away from each other and all be in the same chapter at the same school. For this reason, Greek Life really helps students feel like they are part of the University. It is very easy at a school like this to just go to class and go home and hang out with all your friends from high school who didn't go away to school either. Getting involved really helps you feel like your University is your home at a commuter school.
All that said, there are not tons of wild parties. Most everybody is going home to their parents' house every night.
There are 4 NPC chapters at Wayne and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Formal recruitment is in the fall. Go to it, meet the women and see where you feel most comfortable. That's your best plan Good luck!
ETA: Last I knew, dues were much cheaper than $300 a semester.. more around $200, but it has been a couple years since I worked directly with those women.

Compared to Central in the mid 80's, WSU is a retirement village..lol. And no, I didn't go to CMU, I went to Eastern. Central outdid us by a landslide.

Haha I was thinking the same things. I didn't even go to WSU and I still heard about their parties.
If you do join, don't be afraid to go to a party and be the lone sober one. I got all my drinking done before I was 21 and went to many a party as the designated driver. Just think that you'll be the only one who knows what REALLY happened when everyone's drunk asses are trying to recollect their foggy memory.

It's not helpful unless you're going to a non-commuter campus. No offense girls but every piece of info you gave is useless.
My experience at a commuter campus (in the same area) was that it kinda sucked without a house. But the perks are huge... dues are WAY cheaper than those with a house!
Get involved. It'll make your experience feel more like going to college rather than high school all over again. Are you living in the dorms or commuting?

That was seriously exactly what was so intriguing to be about the Greek system! As a commuter, I could see myself doing as you mentioned and not fully emerging myself in what the University has to offer. It's nice to have some insight into the parties and the dues, I really appreciate it. I'm definitely going to attend the formal recruitment in the fall...
