Was the event in question sponsored by a fraternity AND sorority (i.e. XYZ and ABC mixer) and held on fraternity property? My guess is that the event was sponsored by only a fraternity but had sorority members among those in attendance without the chapter sponsoring the event. You may not have the full story.

FWIW, I didn't drink until I was 21. I turned 21 in December of my senior year. For 6 full semesters of my sorority membership, I didn't drink at all, but I still fully enjoyed the social aspect of Greek Life despite being one of a few people that didn't drink. Some of my fondest memories of living in the house are simply getting ready with my sisters to go out; doing each others' hair and makeup and agonizing over what to wear. I particularly liked themed parties. I enjoyed meeting new people. I liked dancing. There are lots of ways to have fun at socials without drinking. Plus, I kept an eye out for my sisters while we were all out.

My sorority's national policy does not allow chapter funds to pay for alcohol, which is why we always have a cash bar instead of an open bar at our socials. Much of the time, our social chair worked out a deal with the venue to make sodas free at our socials and we often had appetizers as well. (The chapter would pay a fee to the venue to make sodas free and to have appetizer trays out, but that's not alcohol.)

If you look at socials as an opportunity to experience another facet of college life, then you should go through recruitment. If you're just going to stick your nose in the air at anyone who dares get drunk for fun, you're better off not going to college at all.

I'm sorry, but it's not like drinking is just a greek thing, it's a college thing! And it's not like that's all we do or we are being forced to do it. Have you ever heard of philantrophy, sisterhood, tradition, friendship, love, ect? That's what greek life is.

Ditto to all of the above! You are buying into stereotypes and missing the things that Greek organizations were founded on. Sororities are full of different types of women. Some may drink while others may not. It's college, things happen. You should focus on the philanthropy and sisterhood aspects that are much stronger than the party aspect.

My whole thing is that whenever you get a group of guys or girls together they might want to party. its not a greek thing neccesilary, young people like to party. My fraternity works very hard along side the campus with community service, events, charities etc. We also like to have fun, we never use our fraternities funds to fund parties or anything. Some of my brothers dont like to drink and no one would care either way. In college theres partying thats just a fact.

Sounds like you already have made up your mind, and this site will probably not convince you otherwise. Although I'm sure you already knew that. It's too bad that you choose to accept those stereotypes without getting to know more about Greek Life, but if you don't want to be a part of it, then I'm sure your campus has plenty of other organizations in which you can get involved. College is not just about going to class. It's about growing up and experiencing real life. I hope you are able to get that experience.

if you go to college, unless you barricade yourself in your room and never socialize with anyone, you will be exposed to alcohol and partying.

make your own decisions about whether or not to participate. you're a big girl and no one is forcing you to do anything.

Actually that's a more or less universal thing. Most fraternal insurance policies consider it a violation if you use chapter founds for alcoholic.

Ah gotcha. Well I just know that the national fraternities at my school can't use their collected money to buy alcohol (but some can ask for StuGov money or go through a third party vendor).

thinking there is no drinking at all in greek life is like saying the sky isn't blue, drinking goes on but you dont have to drink if you dont' want to.. i dont always drink when others are drinking and they are fine with it
