THIS. For some reason, recruitment stories have become these drawn out, mind-numbing novels. Most of the time, I wait until a story is completely done before I start reading it. Even then, I don't read the entire thing. When a story starts out with 19 chapters, I find it completely unnecessary to read about the first round of recruitment. Usually, people don't remember a lot, and you really haven't been able to meet a lot of members, and half the time people actually waste their time by typing "I don't remember a whole lot about this party"... which then already indicates to me that there's a good chance that chapter won't show up in the next installment.

I like to read the retro rush threads during lunch. They are great entertainment. And, as a non-NPCer, I can never tell when a poster has made up her story. So, for me until she is called out, I really enjoy the story.

I've learned more about NPC recruitment from GC than I ever did at Texas A&M. I had NPC friends, but they never went into any detail about the rush process. When I was at Texas A&M all I heard was 'Yeah, I rushed, got a bid to XYZ and now I am a member.' On GC I've learned more about the entire process from rec letter to bid.

So maybe for some of you NPC ladies its more like 'Aw, c'mon!!!' because you have been through the process yourselves. But for me, it's like 'Wow, that's a different way to recruit.'

Yes, but the NPC women CAN, and one of the biggest problems with the NaNoWriMo crowd is that they use the oldest and most untrue stereotypes. Even if they have a positive ending (OMG, I joined what I thought was the loser chapter and I'm sooooo happy) they don't present an accurate picture of Greek life. Silly heifer who had alcohol at rush parties amd multiple locals at a supercompetitive school rushing with the NPC groups being the first one I can think of.

Put it this way. Imagine if someone wrote a "my journey through NPHC researching" thread and the phrase "paper bag test" came up.

EXACTLY.

I mean, this is GREEKCHAT. PNMs come here and ask for legit advice about recruitment.

I would hate for them to read some totally FAKE story and think that this is how Greek Life really is.

The thing that REALLY annoys me is the fact that PEOPLE STILL WANTED TO HEAR IT AFTER WE FOUND OUT IT WAS FAKE.

SERIOUSLY?

Are you THAT desperate to hear a rush story?

Yeah, that was amazing. Even more amazing was the grief that those who called out the fakers received. Come on people- there is real life to be led. A fake recruitment story should never be the highlight of your day.

But some of them, and I'm thinking of the original pink sequined stockings thread, really were that entertaining purely as fiction.

Maybe moderators could invent a
"this story is completely unverified and likely contains falsehoods" label they could put on threads suspected of being fiction.

ETA: have you read the Sweet Valley High Twins: Rush thread? I really don't know the name of it, but it was awesomely entertaining, to me at least, but I've read Pledged too, come to think of it. Maybe I do enjoy reading fake rush stuff more than the average person.

Actually, it has. Very recently in the KAPsi forum some troll posted that he thinks he can be a member since he has light skin and straight curly hair. He never got a response. I knew he was off, and so did every other NPHC member. Didn't mean that it wasn't a bit entertaining.

I think some people are missing some valid points that were made here. The best point made was by Kevin. I think a serious NPC PNM already has her stuff together and would not even consider relying on some website for answers. The exact same is true for NPHC. Serious NPHC PNMs already know the school / chapter they want to join, have made the necessary contacts and understand the process without relying on a website. The serious NPC / NPHC PNMs don't need to be told what to do via GC or any other website.

And really, what is wrong with 'If you don't like it, don't read it.' If you want to call people out, fine. But don't get so miffed if there are those of us who like to read a retro rush thread.
