My boyfriend thinks that Ben killed Penny since he said that he had a 'promise' left..or something to that effect. And he DID promise Widmore that he would kill his daughter for killing his.

He would have had to kill Desmond to get to her, and crazy woman said that the island was not done with him yet.....
Maybe if Penny is dead.....That is what is going to make Desmond go back to the island to kill Ben?
Another thought....I think Ben helped Locke hang himself...
I thought last night's episode was kind of a let down....they built up this new time travel thing for 6 episodes and then all of the sudden they are on the island and accomplish their goal? It just seems too strange...
