this story is frustrating and sad-- but this thread is funny.
e.g. pg 11:
Jen: I really hope that Ann Curry won't be taking the easy way out and not asking her the serious questions.
knight_shadow: I thought that said "Ann Coulter" for some reason
ZTABullwinkle: Isn't Ann Coulter the one who hates single mothers?
HotDamnImAPhiMu: Ann Coulter hates a lot of people.
VandalSquirrel:Including herself I bet.

The full interview with Ann Curry is on Dateline tonight at 10 EST. I feel like I've pretty much seen the whole interview through snippets, but I'm still going to watch.
On the today show today, they showed a part where she admits to spending ~$100,000 on IVF. She talks about she hoarded (she used that word!) all her money for IVF.....and now it comes out all the while she was on welfare. Lovely. Great decision making.

I'm all about kids staying with their birth parents when it is in the best interest of the child, but in this case, honestly I think those kids need to be pulled from this woman.
She is a looney toon (impo). Companies are avoiding her like the plague because of the public outcry. Those poor children have a mom who doesn't work, won't be able to work now, collects disability, is on welfare (food stamps) and the kicker, lives at home.
Actually the real kicker should be that she used her disability (she was getting it from being injured on a job like 6 years ago or something) on IVF. How the hell is that possible?
This whole situation boggles my mind. The mental state of the mother, the mental state of her parents (I have no kids but seriously if my kid was being this much of a dumb ass I would probably kick them out and say you need to be a grown up and do this on your own, I'm not supporting you), and finally the mental, ethical and moral state of her doctors.
What sucks is you know who is going to be screwed in this situation, the kids? Because if CA is like AZ, it is hell and high water to remove a kid from their biological parent if no physical/sexual abuse comes into play.

How sweet.
She ends up with half of her six previous kids having disabilities and has eight more. Wonder if any of these poor kids will have any disabilites?
She gets food stamps and $490/month for those kids. But, she doesn't realize her hospital bill is 1-3 Million dollars. She doesn't realize that someone is going to have to be paid to watch her kids while she goes back to school and then *gasp* if she actually works...
I worry about this situation. It is IMPOSSIBLE to properly care for 14 kids under the age of 7, with 8 being infants on your own or even with one helper. Now, knowing AT LEAST THREE of them have special needs/are disabled? This is craziness. I am all for the kids finding new homes with people who can properly care / provide for them.

If she goes back to school, she can probably dump her kids on the campus children's center for free.
Fabulous. I guess the biggest challenge would be getting 14 kids to the free day care. Transporting that many children in car seats would take a small bus!

I must be going to all the wrong campuses. I've never seen a campus children's center for the students' children - I've seen them for faculty/staff, but not for the students. And the ones I've seen (for faculty/staff) are certainly not free.
I'm waiting to comment on this woman's decisions until I've seen her interview with Ann tonight. I've recorded the part that was on the Today show, but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I can't imagine how hard her life is. Nor can I imagine how difficult all this must be for her kids.

My school does have an on-campus childcare center/preschool (from birth-grade 1)that's staffed by ECED students but I can tell you that it is DEFINITELY NOT FREE. I volunteered there and I believe the rate was something like $75/week plus cost of lunches and field trips.
I would imagine that not every school has this (we're one of like 3 in our state with one), and if they do, it's not free.

As is denial.
If she's got full disability for three kids, that's $2022 per month, and those kids are eligible for Medicaid automatically. Plus $490 in food stamps, which will increase as each child comes home.
But she's "not on welfare."
Ok, says the eligibility worker. Lady, you are on welfare/public assistance/government benefits, whatever you want to call it.
Please use those benefits to sew your uterus closed. It will thank you.

It's so frustrating.... if this lady seriously thinks she's not on assistance she needs to get her head checked!
And I cannot believe how she somehow saved $100K for IVF. Un-effing-believable.

And, even if there is daycare, 14 slots is an aweful lot of slots to take up for one parent's benefit.

Yes, but she went through ivf. So, if she were to donate her eggs to someone else, she would have had to have had a mental health evaluation. She used her own, but had to go to a fertility clinic - and judging by what we know, no one so much as said "boo!" when a mother of 6 came in and wanted more than 4 embryos implanted; the unmarried, unemployed mother of 6, 3 of whom are special needs. She never would have been approved for adoption . . . and yet she was able to be implanted with a litter.

She's on Dateline right now -- instead of my beloved SVU!
