That said, I'm supposed to go to Chicago right after New Years. It better be at least a little bit warmer, none of this below zero nonsense!!

I think which brand/style works best depends on the shoe and the gait of the wearer as well as the snow. It is pretty dry here so the snow tends to glaciate and get icy, so they work well. However when it dumped big time fluffy stuff (about a foot) in the past couple days they weren't as useful unless there was ice underneath. I had a pair of yaktrax where one part snapped, so I got a different brand with spikes I could replace, and then we got yaktrax through work. A lot of environmental health and safety offices have them for winter.
