Twenty-six years ago today....
On December 2, 1982, the Kappa Upsilon chapter of East Carolina University unanimously decided to re-charter under the 1976 National Convention's "gentlemens agreement" and finally admitted female students as Brothers! It was also the day Dr. Paul Tschetter, dean of Graduate Studies, began his 22 year run as head advisor to our chapter.

Wait what happened?
Did your chapter back in the day go co-ed willingly or died and then consequently went co-ed?

No! We never went anywhere. Our chapter has been continuously active at East Carolina University since January 27, 1953. In fact we're the second oldest GLO on campus, behind Phi Sigma Pi Co-ed Honor Fraternity (Tau chapter), founded in 1929.
In 1982, we just amended our chapter's charter (aka: "re-chartered") to conform to the co-ed decision made in 1976. And yes, it was agreed upon by the majority of the brotherhood back then. It also effectively ended our relationship with the Gamma Sigma Sigma (Delta Chi chapter) chapter as a "sister" chapter.

Yeah....I think you probably want to use different language to describe what you mean in this case.

All you did then was amend your bylaws. AFAIK, you can't amend a charter.
This is NOT considered "Re-chartering", hence the confusion.
"Chartering" refers to when a group gets chartered as a chapter.
"Re-chartering" refers to when a group re-establishes a chapter at their school (which had gone defunct, and hence 'lost' their charter), getting back the charter ("Re-charter").

sorry Pirate
Michael Brown is right on this one.
You didn't recharter b/c your charter wasn't declared null and void by the National Office prior to going co-ed. "Rechartering" is an inappropriate word...
