Apparently, I was a bit misunderstood. (and I'm never going to live this down, I realize). A guy wearing NPC letters, like everyone has said, isn't going to be confused as a perp. At some campuses, including southern ones, I know sororities give away event shirts/koozies/bright neon hats that just have the letters on them. Now, generally we just wear them to the event, but it doesn't bother me to see something that obviously isn't a misrepresentation of self or a deliberate misrepresentation of that organization's values.
My problem was very specifically with someone not in the sorority who acted as a member of the sorority.

Do fathers really wear hats with their daughter's sorority name on them? Doesn't seem like something men would do.
The guy was probably homeless and had no idea the GLO was a sorority, and therefore I would've kept my mouth shut. We all know that no one aside from members are supposed to wear our letters, but I'm pretty sure most of our founders cared about us making positive contributions to humanity, and if a hat with my org's letters is helping keep a homeless man's head warm in winter, I believe our founders would be pleased.

Something tells me that if he'd been homeless and appeared so, Scandia would have included that detail in her post. I am guessing it was a dad who was on his way out and just grabbed the first hat on the kitchen table. He probably wasn't even aware what he had on.
Going back to southern whatever food product it was taking the letters off the car - I have yet to hear, what exactly did she do? Did she take a straightedge and scrape them off a window, or were they a cling half falling off and she just finished the job?

And, that still changes nothing in my opinion. The fact that you forgot your proper raising and messed with someone else's property over letters still appalls me.
I doubt that any NPC sorority would ADVOCATE the forceful removal of letters by ripping them off of a car.
Even if the girl was acting like she's in your sorority, does it make you any better for lowering yourself to her level?

So I'm so tired, and there's so many sugar sweetie honey southern pie nicknames I attributed this action to a similar user name.
Oh and I still think it is super tacky to destroy or alter someone's property.

Why? Especially when it's just some random guy.

First of all, as has been said, there could be any number of reasons this guy was wearing this hat. If he really was trying to be viewed as a “fraternity” member, then it’s sad, because almost anyone who is Greek would be able to tell otherwise. And it would be laughable if he was saying things to try and pass himself off as such.
On the other hand, he could have just bought the hat without knowing what it even meant. These are Greek letters. Surprisingly enough, some people, when seeing these letters, don’t think about fraternities and sororities… because Greek organizations use letters from the Greek alphabet, which was created long before “our letters” were put together in the order that they were.
Also, maybe this guy is a past sweetheart of a chapter. You never know.
The point is, you got mad and immediately made assumptions about this guy, knowing absolutely nothing about him. And then you sounded as if you were justifying the behavior of ripping a hat off of someone’s head if they were wearing Greek letters that they didn’t “earn”. None of us claimed we were saints. And I can’t speak for everyone here, but while I’m not perfect, I also know that to forcibly remove an article of clothing from someone else’s body is wrong. For me to even think of doing that because of something I conjured up in my own head about how awful this “perp” is, clearly wouldn't be the right thing to do. And if you say in a public forum that you would support someone’s decision to do just that, or to at least feel that way based on a ridiculous and unfounded conclusion, you’re going to get all kinds of snarky comments. To think otherwise is a display of ignorance.

It is. A TRUE Southern lady would be snide and catty in the most passive aggressive way possible but certainly would have the self respect to keep her rude attitude veiled under the guise of syrupy sweet sarcasm.

IMO, vandalizing/defacing someone else's property isn't even at the same level as pretending to be in an sorority. You can't be fined or go to jail for being a perp.
