And yes, you can pinpoint someone's social status with a pretty fair degree of accuracy by looking at whether they were in one of about 4 fraternities or sororities at the state school. There are a few exceptions to judging people based on tiers, but people do think it's kind of funny when even with a (multiple usually) legacy you can't get into one of the good chapters at your school.

But, how do the parents feel if their son transfers to a campus where his fraternity brothers are a bunch of "Shanes"?

You don't transfer. And the same fraternities are good at every school down here with a few exceptions anyways. KA, SX, SAE are going to be good most anywhere, DKE is really good at Bama, SN is really good at Ole Miss, PhiGam/FIJI is good a few places. But your fraternity is tied to your hometown to a big degree, and no one really transfers, you go to the good state school in your state like UGA, Ole Miss, Bama (although that's kind of the exception with Auburn being fairly good as well), etc.
