Bid Day!
I spent the majority of the night after Preference wondering if I had made the right decision. I was sad that my favorite chapters had dropped me so early on, but I was beginning to really like the one that I wrote on my preference card. My friends “Christina” and “Sarah” had also attended preference night and were very happy with their choices. Christina had ranked Dutch Warmblood as her first choice, Quarter Horse as her second choice, and Clydesdale as her third choice. She said that these three were so different, but she would be happy at any one of them. Sarah ranked Quarter Horse as her first choice and Clydesdale as her second choice. She did not list the third party that she had attended that night. The morning of Bid Day, I started to think about the positive side of things and how I could have the chance to meet some amazing people and become actively involved at my new school. Despite my newfound optimism, I was still a little skeptical and became pretty stressed out, so Christina and I went to lunch to take my mind off the whole process.
I got back to my room at around 2pm and had about 3 hours or so to relax and get ready for Bid Day. I called my parents because they had been longing for an update and they were happy that I had decided to give it a chance. A few minutes after I had gotten off the phone with them…

I received a call from my Rho Chi. I cringed, knowing exactly why she was calling. She asked how I was doing and then proceeded to tell me that I had not received a bid. My heart sank. Rush was finally over, but it didn’t end the way I was hoping it would. I walked over to Christina’s room with tears in my eyes and told her the news. I wasn’t as visibly upset as I thought I would be, but I still felt absolutely horrible inside. I sent off my two friends and told them to text me as soon as they found out where they would be receiving their bids. I was also interested in the Rho Chi reveal, so I gave them the names of my Rho Chis and told them to keep an eye out for me.
Unfortunately, they didn’t mention names during the Rho Chi reveal, so my friends were unable to identify mine. Christina ended up at her third choice, Clydesdale, but was very happy to be there. Sarah got her first choice, Quarter Horse, and was also happy with it.
I won’t lie, it was very difficult to see so many girls walking around in their bid day shirts yesterday. It made me feel like I wasn’t good enough for any of these organizations. It’s hard to answer the question, “So where did you end up?” without bringing back those negative feelings. I just hope I can find my niche at this school. It’s so disheartening to know that I had failed even though I had spent so much time and energy preparing for this week.
A little bird also told me that the only reason I had been cut by a particular organization was because I was a transfer student, and they didn’t know how to weigh my GPA against those of current students (although it was VERY high). Other than that, they loved my personality and enjoyed talking to me. I’m almost positive that this question was brought up at most of the chapters, and that it played a significant role (along with the fact that I’m a sophomore) in the selection process. It’s just very unfortunate that this was such a big factor.
I have since emailed the Greek Life Office about COB opportunities in the hope that I too will find a home.
Well, since I know you’re all dying to know where my friends ended up, I will reveal those two code names… Clydesdale is Phi Mu and Quarter Horse is Alpha Chi Omega.
(I just noticed that I made a major mistake when posting part of my story… I posted my Day One story while the Bid Day Festivities were going on, clearly giving away the fact that I was sitting in my room instead of at the ceremony… oops! Did anyone catch that?)
