I already commented on that. I don't think any of us believe Alpha Phi would seriously consider taking two new members. That's ridiculous.

On the other hand, I have no problem believing that the general sentiment/rhetoric behind that statement is absolutely true for Alpha Phi.

Frankly, I believe they are going to possibly have 400-500 potential new colony members based on some of the things I've read here. Certainly at LEAST 300. They are going to have plenty of room to be selective and take the girls they really want - which frankly, as we can all figure out via common sense, is probably going to be a larger number rather than a smaller one.

Everyone except Gamma Phi made quota. There must be something wrong with Pi Phi's list on the website because they made quota (at least freshman quota).

Yes I actually find some grain of truth in this. Two members? Probably not but there have been some campuses (Cornell comes to mind) where we have specifically and very strategically only recruited 10 members and held at around that number for some time. Our Delta chapter is now a top rusher so when everyone thought we were "crazy" for re-colonizing with 10 members but we knew what we were doing

Now here is my disclaimer!! I want to caution people to not start thinking that our colonization plan is 10 women at Bama...I am not on the colonization team but given the house etc I would guess you will see somewhere around 100 new Phi's. However I felt really strongly that I needed to post and let people know yes we have pledged a highly selective few women on campuses where total is upwards of 100.

It's important on this campus to be ultra selective. So while we may have 300 or more interviews I would be highly surprised if we pledged to total this semester as some great women are either too shell shocked from formal recruitment to put themselved through another process. Other women are hanging back to see how we do, what shakes out. We would be interested in speaking with these women and potentially pledging some of them later in the semester.

On pins and needles for Alpha Phi and wishing the best to the team there!

I have a quick question. If a girl is offered a bid by Alpha Phi and she denies it, she can't accept another "snap" bid from a different sorority, right? She has to wait a year, right before she can take another bid?

No. If she turns it down, she can accept elsewhere if one is offered. It's only if she accepts one that it is binding for a year. And it wouldn't be a "snap bid" from another group. It would be done thru COB/COR. Snap bids are offered between bid matching and actual bid day activities. Once all the bids are handed out from formal recruitment/snap bidding, the COR/COB process starts and continues until a group has reached quota and/or total. (or there is a moratorium for colonization for a new chapter)

Of course it's ridiculous. Her point was that just because they're colonizing, they don't feel the need to take just anyone for the sake of numbers. (I had no idea that people would actually think she meant it as a factual statement).

I thought that even if a girl started pledging a colony and quit, she wasn't bound by the one year rule because the colony wasn't a chapter yet. If I'm all wet let me know - the example I'm going on is from many o' moons ago.

The rules are different with formal and informal recruitment. In formal recruitment, a PNM could be matched to any group she lists on her MRAA. If, for example, she lists them all and gets her 3rd choice, but is unhappy with her result, she is still bound to them for one year, even if she doesn't "accept" on bid day.

A PNM theoretically can be offered as many bids via COB as there are chapters participating, but she can only accept one. Once she accepts one, and signs it, THEN she is bound for a whole year.

I'm not sure if colony status makes the "wait a year" rule void on accepted bids, but, merely being offered a COB bid does not bind a PNM in any situation.

When I went through recruitment, all of the chapters on my campus were colonies recruiting more girls through formal recruitment (frills and all). When it came time for preference card signing, they sat us all down in an auditorium and had someone from NPC tell us about how seriously we should take the preference card process - that this bubble sheet in our hands would indicate from which houses we would accept a bid, and that if we got a bid from one of the chapters we bubbled in, we COULD NOT accept a bid to another organization for one calendar year. So, unless what NPC told us then has been changed, NMs of colonies are held to the 1-year policy as well.

Now, if I may say something about all of the "there's always Alpha Phi" comments. Alpha Phi will have the pick of the litter for girls who, for whatever reason, did not pledge during formal recruitment. I would expect the competition to get in that chapter will be high, and I would anticipate they WILL go for as many girls as possible given the importance of numbers at Bama. Please be cautious when you encourage girls about Alpha Phi, because not all of them will be able to join and it's also unfair to Alpha Phi.

Finally, women that didn't go through formal recruitment should also consider Gamma Phi Beta as an option if they have COR events.

^^^but if all your chapters went NPC at the same time, that's a little bit different than the one colony on campus situation they will have at Alabama.

I'd say the real difference is that the bids extended to new members of Alpha Phi won't be through formal recruitment. I think that's the real issue, not the matter of it being a colony.
