It seems like sports events are a good way to get participation and make some money for charity.

Now, it can be anything from sponsoring a football tournament, softball tourney, or a Powderpuff game. Either way, you charge an entry fee, and all of the money goes to charity. You can make it an all day thing - do a BBQ, get t-shirts, etc. Sporting events get everyone out, and it's a fun way to do something good for charity.
