Nas' New Album - First Impression

ok....so I got it it...and up to track Fried Chicken right now....
Admittedly I wasn't feeling the title that it was supposed to have been named and I am kind of glad he decided to leave it untitled at this time, but insofar, this CD has some good meat on the bone and it's been many many years since I enjoyed a hip hop cd back to front.

The cover itself speaks volumes

My first impressions:

Some of the music for a few tracks are nothing impressive altho I did like the beats for Hero, Testify and especially Sly Fox.

This is an album that kind of hearkens back to days when rap and hip hop really started gaining consciousness, when people were more concerned about the state of the world rather than the bling and killing each other. My only concern was that a few of the tracks almost sounded incomplete...whereas you were expecting more...but that was it.

Nothing really new or ground breaking besides what I have heard a lot of spoken artists and poets do...and Nas is just there but not quite....out there BUT soemthing like this is really what the industry needs to begin getting rap and hip hop back on track....having music with a message.

So....this insofar is my first impression, and on a scale of one to 10...I give it a 7.

I don't like him, but my bf is a huge fan. He says it's too political for him, but it's still pretty good.

"Untitled" is pretty mediocre. Nas is now riding the coattails of Illmatic without really anything solid to show for it since - he's borderline irrelevant, especially as hip hop actually becomes more socially important, diverse and relevant than during his prime (in spite of his protestations to the opposite).
The outtake sessions mixtape he released with Green Lantern is actually superior in every way, and it's free. It's the only relevant thing Nas has released in 10 years. That's hard to say, but it's the truth.

I don't listen to a lot of new school hip hop and rap...most of it now is too commercialized and irrelavent.
I really haven't truly bought and liked a rap CD is almost 20 years.

Like I said...this is fair, slightly above mediocre, it's not pure genius but it's something that I can listen to without wanting to turn it off in disgust.
