At KU, there will be buses available to take prospective members around during Recruitment. The sorority houses are kind of in clusters, so there still is a fair amount of walking involved. I wouldn't suggest trying to do it in heels or any other uncomfortable shoe. Maybe you could wear a pair of comfy flip flops between events and then put on your fancy shoes for the actual event?
Recs are not required, but it is a nice way for the chapters to learn a little bit more about you. I was from out of state, and when I went through Recruitment at KU, I think that I had recommendations for a 5 or 6 of the 13 sororities. I am also the first in my family to be Greek!
Ask around, and I think that you would be surprised to find that you know more sorority alumnae than you think. Also, Alumnae Panhellenic associations are a great way to connect with sorority women. Greater Kansas City has a wonderful alumnae association....check them out here:
