Bobby Murcer dies

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...=.jsp&c_id=mlb

This is incredibly sad. I've been a Yankees fan as long as I can remember, and for that entire time, Bobby Murcer has been linked to the team. He had just finished playing when I started following the team in the mid-80s, and my memories of watching Yankees games often include memories of Murcer's analysis.

He was an outstanding player, who got a bad rap because he was supposed to be the next Mickey Mantle. He wasn't that good, but he was very good, and just happened to play for the Yankees during some of their weakest years. He left the team in the late 70s just as the club was on the upswing, and, if I remember correctly, never won a World Series as a Yankee.

Over the years, though, he gained more and more popularity among Yankee fans, and started to get some of the largest ovations on Old Timers Days.

He will certainly be missed. RIP Bobby.

Mantle and Murcer -- two great Yankees and two great Oklahomans.
