I think you'd be surprised how many chapters at schools went coed in the 60s and 70s. Successful chapters at "fratty" schools. It happened. Many HQs came in making threats, suspending charters changing the dynamic back to what it is today.

These chapters weren't initiating women because they were unsuccessful or it affected their ability to mix. It was just the times. Just as not every chapter of a fraternity at every school is the same, not all chapters are static throughout time.

That is interesting to me. Do you have some other examples? I don't have anything to compare it to. This never happened to a SN chapter as far as I know.

There is an interesting history of co-ed groups on the Alpha Delta Phi (Brown University) website here... http://www.brown.edu/Students/Alpha_...story/coed.php

The Sigma Nu chapter at MIT decided to go coed in 1970. They disaffiliated with the national fraternity and adopted their chapter designation, Epsilon Theta, as their name. Sigma Nu has since recolonized; the chapter was rechartered in 1995.

The same thing happened with the MIT chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha in 1975. They went coed, disaffiliated from the national fraternity, and now go by pika.

And the same thing happened with the MIT chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu. They went coed, disaffiliated from the national fraternity in 1973, and now call themselves Fenway House.

Here is what happened to Sigma Nu's chapter at MIT when they decided to go co-ed... http://web.mit.edu/thetans/www/actives.html

Weak, nerdy men and beat chicks. Probably a great GPA - but I'm sure their athletic trophy case is sparce.

It's interesting to see the guys bashing MIT and Brown in this thread.

Everyone is different everywhere.

Edited to remove shame from those who do not deserve it.

The other day you were saying Greek orgs should be all about GPA and leadership. Now because some group that you arbitrarily decide not to like has a good GPA, you're focusing on athletics? Typical.

The point is you're no better or worse than anyone else for the way your chapter is, and neither are these kids from MIT and Brown. But if you want to get down to it on who is more likely to succeed in life, it's probably the MIT and Brown kids - NOT the guys from your chapter.

The larger point that you're missing here is the other day you got riled up when some southern fraternity guys insulted your chapter for being different from theirs culturally & socially. You responded with a bunch of stuff about GPA, leadership, objective standards, etc. Now you're faulting people you don't even have any interaction with, because they appear to be (from a few pictures you've seen, some of which were clearly in jest in the first place) socially and culturally different than you. What happened to your standards?

You are truly a pathetic individual.

They're nerds because they go to MIT, not because their fraternity went co-ed.

Same way your brothers probably aren't so bright because they go to NIU, not because they're Sigma Nu's.

*** All, I'd like to make an appeal to the crowd to take it easy on the NIU Snakes. I promise you, not a single active member of that chapter has come here causing any problems.

Yes, but apparently they are the pinnacle which all other Greek organizations should be compared to and aspire to be.

Best Rush Schedule I've seen in a longtime: http://web.mit.edu/thetans/www/rush.html With a Dumpling Dinner, it would sure narrow thte playing field

I can't make jokes about the nerdiness of MIT. My father went there. And even though he always had a sliderule in his pocket when I was a kid, he is my hero.

Hilarious rush schedule! Maybe I should be ashamed to admit it, but these peeps share my sense of humor. My favorite MUST ATTEND events on the schedule:

Starch! 8:00pm
We were cleaning our house, and we found three gallons of liquid starch lying around... come help us figure out what to do with it (we have some ideas).

Battleship Twister 9:00pm
Come play two of your favorite games at once! It is like battleship, there's a twister board, and... well... you'll just need to come to find out.

Pillow Fort Construction 9:00pm
Just because you've grown up doesn't mean you can't still have fun. Come test your architectural skills with pillows, cushions, and mattresses.

Bad Movie Night 10:00pm
"Let's say you and I go searching for our rocky glowing radioactive friend from spce... together." Have you seen The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra? Come find out how truly bad a movie can be.

Make Your Own Sushi 7:30pm
Did you ever want to learn how to make sushi? Come find out, and put in exactly what you want. Do you want salmon? Tuna? Bacon, apples, and cream cheese?

Human Chess 9:00pm
You might be a pawn or a queen, but you can't take another piece unless you triumph in hand-to-hand pseudo combat! Deep Blue would never win at human chess. Come battle it out or cheer on the players.

I actually think the Make Your Own Sushi party sounds like a great mixer/sisterhood event for anyone!
